The fact that this game removed the best feauture of the X-series, flying any ship you could see, eliminates all of the fun and in my eyes puts a nail in the coffin for this game in the series.
Being stuck with piloting a single ship throughout the game, not being able to directly fly or manouver the capital ships or any other vessel for that matter is what takes the fun away from this game.
Despite the player vessel being versetile and configurable, i would have loved the oppertunity to hoard tonnes of weapons and equipment to fit them all to the biggest most powerfull capital i could, and pilot the ship into battle myself, but no that is not possible.
The X-series was first and foremost about freedom to choose what you wanted to become, and taking away the freedom to choose what ship you fly is plain and simply a gamebreaking mechanic.
