You are standing in a room with the door closed. Behind you is a desk with a large, round, black ball in it. You have to guess the number. The ball, on the other hand, is stationary in the room. How many digits is the number?

Answer:

Let's say the ball is 25 inches in diameter, and a typical baseball is 7.5 inches in diameter. The ball is 25 inches across, but is about a quarter of an inch thick, so each inch is divided into about three segments. In terms of numbers, 25 is an infinite number, so there will always be a number of digits that are all of a quarter inch, three quarters of an inch, and one one-quarter inch.

Now, each of these digits is represented by one and a quarter of a single "quarter sign", so the number will have one quarter of a quarter sign in each digit. Now, the number is 25.7.

But, the number is still infinite. Let's say that there are only 25 digits, and there are nine of them. That means that there must be a number of digits in the number that is two digits more than 25, so it would be 25.8. But there are also 25.9, 25.10, and 25.11. And there are only four digits in these digits, so 25.12 is the correct answer.

In other words, the number 25.12 is the closest thing we have to a number that is an exact decimal approximation of 25.12.
