Short, very short, but sweet puzzle adventure game where you play a lonely robot waking up after a global calamity. Who are you? What happened? Who is this mysterious King of Diamonds.

The puzzles mainly come in two types, avoid the obstacles and follow a pattern guitar hero style on a screen to open doors to further you adventure. There are also a few enemies that need to be trapped or avoided. These follow the pattern sections are best played with the keyboard, it was too slow with a controller.

The graphics are fantastic and reminiscent in style to Human fall flat. The OST and sounds effects are equally good.

There were a few minor quibbles, the main menu was a little hard to use, selecting was a little haphazard and one of the checkpoints really should have been after solving the door pattern puzzle, not before. Just minor inconsequential stuff.

Don't expect more than 20-25mins out of this but at the price, it's a high quality enjoyable game with room clearly for more episodes. Can't wait.

The Chronicles of King Arthur is the first in a series of Match-3 games set around the Arthurian legend.

You play Arthur starting his journey to claim his rightful throne, improving the country and the lives of its citizens as he goes. Collect various materials in the levels and you can buy towns, ports and other infrastructure for the people. These act as the story beats for the game, each time you buy/open an area, you get a nicely animated and fully voiced scene. The VO ranges from quite good to pretty average in the case of one main character! Also, Arthur's mum looks quite young to have an adult son!

The 74 levels are where you'll spend most of your time and this is a very high-quality experience. The graphics are lovely and sharp and the game is clearly designed for PC, not a bare-bones mobile port. Standard Match-3 stuff occurs, blocks that need to be broken first, blocks that need to be moved from the top to the bottom to collect and plenty of abilities that charge up over time when you match 4 or above. These do regenerate a little slow at times especially when you're down to the last block in a difficult position and you're endlessly matching 4+ trying to gain access to the most basic ability. The game also has two modes, with and without a time limit. The time pressure is pretty tight at times so you can't dawdle in this mode.

It's difficult to do something truly unique or new with a match-3 game but with the high-quality sound, graphics and story King Arthur Episode 1 compares very favourably to the best of the genre.

Kolumno is an interesting combination of puzzle game and reaction game. Drop the steel ball from the top of the column to the bottom avoiding all the obstacles, simple as that.

Of course, nothing is that simple! It's all about timing and the correct use of the various skills at hand. Any hit results in the ball missing the hole at the bottom so you have to be perfect, sometimes pixel perfect. Rings spin around, open and close and appear and disappear. Luckily you have the aforementioned skills. Pause the ball for a few seconds, shrink the ball to fit through tight gaps, drop really fast and smash through up to four blocks. Most of the levels only require one or two skills or even just perfect timing. Some of the later levels do require you to use most if not all the skills, these levels are tough though there are multiple solutions.

The graphics and sound fit the minimalist theme well and the overall presentation is great. A totally enjoyable experience for the price, sometimes frustrating but always rewarding when you get it right.

It was said that there was once a magical Talisman that protected the Dwarven people handed down from King to new King. The last King could not decide which of his four sons should inherit so he split the empire in four and gave them each a quarter of the Talisman. Sadly, all four brothers disappeared taking the Talisman with them. Tasked by the town Councilor to enter the nearby ruins to help heal the village you find a small piece of the Talisman leading to a grand quest.

Runic Rampage is an isometric action RPG with obvious mobile roots. Now mobile port is not necessarily a bad thing but some of the grindy mechanics and the imprecise control system probably needed a little more work.

The game is split into 4 acts each with 2 areas and a boss fight. Each area has a separate theme and needs to be completed three times to proceed. These areas are generated procedurally and each takes somewhere between 4-7 minutes with around 50-60 enemies. While each areas type is unique, the enemies are just reskins of 4-5 basic archetypes: basic melee, fast range, slow range and an oversized enemy. There is a lot of effort put into making these areas feel different though.

The control system is pretty simple and can be played equally well with a controller or keyboard and Mouse. Combinations are performed with only two keys and I can’t help but think a third key would have been useful to bind dodge to. All too frequently I was trying to dodge when the game performed a “heavy” combination instead. This got especially frustrating in the cave area where rocks constantly fell from the ceiling and dodging mid fight usually resulted in an attack of some kind. There is also a magic system in the form of pickups, burning, poisoning and the very useful freeze, these can also be upgraded into more powerful abilities.

Now the grind, each boss requires a certain number of talisman shards to open up. For the first two acts I had enough but in the third and fourth I have to repeat levels multiple time to get enough of at the end of level loot drop to open the boss fight. At the end of every successful level, you can choose 3 of the 6 items available as loot, cash, skill points, treasure chest or a cosmetic outfit item. The shards are in chests with other items that open with golden keys that drop at random in levels, though I was never short of keys so that didn’t add to the grind. Skill points can be spent on 4 categories: damage, defence, agility and money gathering. Cash can be spent to upgrade weapons and magical abilities and buy new weapons.

The 3D graphics are very decent with fun enemy design and heaps of glorious blood and guts. The story is also nicely told in a series of fantastic hand-drawn vignettes and the accompanying soundtrack is fantastic.

This is isn’t Torchlight, Van Helsing or Grim Dawn but it’s also clear that significant effort has been put into this game. It’s priced appropriately and a lot of fun can be had.

Up Left Out is another short minimalist puzzle game from the maker of Hook, Klocki and Push but this time you are sliding blocks around.

There are various goals to accomplish. It starts off simply, you just need to free each block from it’s holding pin. Other mechanics are slowly introduced, blank blocks that just get in the way, patterns and lines on top of the blocks that need to be matched together to end the puzzle, buttons that rotate all the pieces and walls/gates that can be manipulated to stop blocks at specific places. These walls demonstrate the fundamental mechanic, blocks slide as far as they can until they hit something. Some of the later and best puzzles contain blocks that can only be moved once that pattern on top of them is replicated on other movable blocks.

Sticking with the minimalist setting, I’m not completely sure how many levels there are! Around 50 or so, should take about an hour, as there isn’t a level select screen. Thankfully you can now quit the game when finished without opening the task manager.

Short, sweet, less than a dollar but could use a few more of the harder puzzles.

Roboball is a marble rolling puzzle game where your objective is to roll the marble from start to finish. The can be achieved by opening doors with buttons, riding rotating bridges, pushing cubes/barrels around, bouncing on trampolines, triggering laser switches and more.

There are ten levels in the initial release with more planned, these range from short tutorial levels to grand sprawling multi-puzzle levels. The game really shines during these larger puzzles. The graphics and audio are really good as well. Even the larger puzzles perform perfectly though having the game take place in the sky against a 2D background would help. Though, the game really does need more levels and more complex ones at that. A lot of the levels feels like introductions to a new toy to play with. One level with laser switches, one with trampolines etc...

One of the best things about the games is the controls. A lot of marble roller style games are tough to control. You get locked in a feedback loop of over-correcting and you inevitably fail. Using the WASD keys is very easy here and you can also use the mouse to steer and rotating up and down to moderate your speed. It really is quite easy to make complex manoeuvres.

The game also has a fully integrated level designer with full workshop support. The editor could definitely use a usability pass, it’s too easy to add and delete items when you’re trying to move things around and snap them together but with a little time and effort, some grand creations could be made.

This is a great addition to the marble rolling puzzle genre, it’s a bit bare bones atm, but with some more imaginative levels, it could really shine.

What presents as a simple Sudoku clone at first, Puzlogic is actually an ingenious mixture of the aforementioned Sudoku, Kakuro and even the mathematical formulae featuring in games such as Hexologic. Don’t go into this game thinking you’ll be done in an hour!

I believe the first 32 levels were released while the game was in early access to garner feedback. These levels are pretty straightforward starting out with basic Sudoku style levels, no number can be repeated in any horizontal or vertical line. Kakuro elements are then introduced, you are given the sum of various lines as well. Then you get a second coloured number tile and more summations and the fun really begins. The second half of the game is where it really shines with the Kakuro elements added to with dotted lines around areas that also need to add up and even sections where the tiles need to add up equally. Some of these later puzzles can take quite a while.

The game board is represented with a nice randomly rotating pastel background with occasional effects such as light rain along with pleasing ambient music. Completing a puzzle is as simple as dragging and dropping a tile to an open square on the board. There is also a notation system that allows you to mark possible values for each square, though you can only do four at a time, sometimes more were needed. Though that usually meant I’d started the puzzle at the wrong or maybe a harder place and had too many options. There is also a help/hint system that flashes red when you make a mistake and checks off the summations when you are correct. This help system can be turned off in the options menu and the game rewards you a star for completing a level without it. You also get a star for completing a level without any mistakes.

Now, the English translation could use a little work. Some the explanations for new mechanics weren’t as clear as they could be and to be fair that’s only a very minor complaint. It was also a little unclear how the level progression system worked. Is it related to the number of stars or just how many puzzles you have finished with or without stars. I’d also love to see some sort of Steam Workshop integration for other players to add their own puzzles.

Few things match the relief of dropping that last tile into the last box on one of the later puzzles and it is right the first time! Puzlogic is a fantastic, complex and thoroughly rewarding mathematical logic game and is a steal at the price.

NeonCode is a short Cyberpunk styled adventure game set in a fully explorable 3D world. You play Craig Williams, a suspended cop looking to make ends meet when he hears a shot in the distance and goes to investigate.

Full of nods and winks to the genre and other Sci-fi, Duerden Lane, Commander Shepard appears on the 20 credit note (well how else would you make purchases from your favourite store on the citadel?), this rendition of what appears to be future Miami/Vice City is an imaginative place. The city and surrounds are surprisingly large with plenty of nooks and crannies to explore. In fact, more game and even sub-quests could easily have been accommodated without too much reuse of locations. The English translation could probably use an improvement though and the text is pretty small at high resolutions.

Made largely with free unity assets repetition is common. The same hover-car constantly runs the same loop and only a few body models are used. The graphics while pretty basic still allow for a wonderful atmosphere of night time, fog and neon, the staples of the Cyberpunk genre. The game also has a fantastic original soundtrack that should probably be added as a DLC.

For all the faults, there is plenty of fun to be had and with the admirable ambition present, it's well worth the price. There's even a car chase!

Tok is simple puzzle game where your goal is to rotate the various pieces to make paths from the start to multiple ends.

Each level presents you with a group of parts: 90 deg. curves, straight pieces, right angles, t-junctions and four-way splits and it's up to you to rotate the various pieces to form connected routes. It's really not much more than that. There is an added complication though, a time limit for each level. You can't really dawdle as the time limit is quite tight on many levels resulting in the first one or two attempts on some levels being more about planning.

Once you get into the swing of things you can see the routes pretty easily but the game could definitely use some sort of additional mechanics as nothing new is introduced from level 1 to 60.

Cheap and cheerful but doesn't do anything particularly inventive or compelling. Decent way to waste an hour or so.
