A fantastic turn based strategy game!
I Highly recommend this game 10/10 from me
Short review:
Are you looking for an addictive and creative strategy game??? This is a game for you. "SoW" sets itself apart from other Strategy games with an excellent squad creation tool that lets you form your army as you see fit. Want a cav army to charge enemy armies? Get a squad leader that can ride and form up around him. Lacking mages? turn your horseman into deadly fire, ice, dark and lighting mages to devastate the battlefield. Campaign is fun and puts you into plenty of different scenarios and map types while adding different mechanics to keep it varied and fresh. The game had me thinking through my moves on harder difficulties and I had no problems re tooling my army to face the challenges they encountered if I faced defeat and had to re play a board. I thought for sure I would get tired of it but scouting out the best recruits and molding your squads to be the best killing machines on the battlefield was a blast and I highly recommend it!

Long winded review:
You spend your times in 2 distinct sections of this game. Half the time and fun comes in building your squads. A 200 unit cap is placed on your army and at the start I thought their was no way you would need that many units. But as the game progresses having a variety of different units always made tuning your army to the next levels challenges much more enjoyable. Most units start out as a basic class and a default set of skills and attributes. As they fight they gain xp and level all par for the course. Now for the fun part when they are ready to get a promotion depending on their skill set they can be 1 or all of the classes granted you have the resources and skills on the soldier to pay for it. Going all the way up to tier 3 and some classes a tier 4. Now lets say you want to make your heavy swordsman into a cavalry unit. You can demote the unit for free!!!! and get back the iron you spend to make a heavy swordsman and then pay a horse resource to promote up to cav. don't like the cav, demote to get the horse back and re spend the iron. The system feels great and once you get a little ways into the campaign you will have enough resources to begin building the army you want! Units have a variety of stats that are tuned to their affinity in game(light or dark for example.) Which after learning the affinities you will get a quick summary of how that unit will level up and will shape up at the higher levels(Light for example will give a unit higher loyalty and leadership stats as they level making them better squad leaders.) As the game progresses new unit types are made available and shake up your compositions. Units can also be effected by weather, time of day and even terrain so take everything into account when choosing new recruits to get the most out of them. To get your army to fighting shape a squad leader needs to be selected(Generally a unit with good leadership skill.) Once your squad leaders start leveling up this skill you can assign more units to the squad up to a maximum of 9 units. These units slot into a 3x3 grid where unit position does matter. Units in the front row facing the enemy can tank for the units in the back, some units can hit the entire row or the column of this grid or other units have area cleave damage and spells focused on different areas. While units like rouges can get into the back lines and do crit attacks on your poor mages, healers and archers. Units can be individually killed off from your or enemy squads. take too many losses and your squads morale will plummet and their combat effectiveness will drop. Units with High morale will get free actions and higher crit chance. Lose a squad leader and the rest of the squad will mourn the loss. Getting them back to a friendly monastery will allow for a revive in mission at a cost of your gold reserve(Unless your playing on Ironman, good luck.) Sometimes the squad leader is best placed in the backline, other times he needs to be on the flanks. The grid allows for some really interesting unit setups. The system takes some getting used to but the end result is well worth the learning curve. I actually felt like I had an army of useful units. I compare this to 3 houses where the mercenaries felt like a clunky add on to single 1 man/woman army killing machines. With "SOW" the entire squad feels awesome to watch attack and achieve its purpose. (Not bashing FEH3 Houses have hundreds of hours and enjoyed that game for different reasons, but its the most popular game that is similar to this game to come out recently that iv'e played in my opinion)

Of course the other half is the battlefield, the campaign does a good job of putting your army to the test. New units and mechanics are added every few levels. Weather and terrain is always a consideration and if you can get a good amount of bonus objectives your army will be trucking from the rewards in no time. As units fight near each other some key characters get relationship bonuses like in Fire Emblem units will speak after battle and become friends or more if they fight enough. Items will drop that allow you to fight outside the campaign in an arena to keep your bloodlust going. Earn enough money and you can buy items to equip your squads. Their is a shop that can be found on most levels to spend gold in mission or you can save it for back in the war room. Short on money you can command your troops to attack in different variations(Force surrender for example will have your troops taking prisoners for ransom if the enemy morale is low enough.) Say your troops are going up against a lot of archers you can command your tanky units to fight with caution and less damage will be received during the enemy faze. Later on more squad manipulations are added but I wont spoil what or how its done. You will have to play to find out!

End rant.

This game got me to jump at every turn. It succeds at being creepy and the jmp scares unexpected. The sound in the game can be errie and at some times random. My one complaint is the Dungeon segments are quite long and in the latter stages reptitive. On top of the light being out almost the entire time due to very sparse candle placement. (Candles are a light source in game.) The latter stages of the Dungoens are very long and if you happen to die you will need to re do the dungeon. Speaking of death the game has a great mechanic in when you die you need to pick a door to continue, pick the wrong door and you lose the game!

The concept of the game is great but falls short on the story. Right as the game starts to get interesting it ends as quickly as it begins. If the game was longer I could recommend it. I cannot forget to mention the riddles prevelant on the Doors your traversing.... some riddles are either too easy or make no sense.
