I've played Guild Wars 2 for 7k hours and I think it is still worth getting in 202X. It's a laid back casual friendly MMO with story based PvE where you don't have to worry about climbing the gear ladder or any other ladder. I stopped playing in 2016 and returned in 2020, picking up where I left, with my gear still being relevant.

GW2 is a very player friendly game. You see someone struggling with a tough enemy? Help them, you'll get the same loot and experience, no need to fight for mobs and loot. You wanna play with a friend? Add them to your party, so they can join your personal story with you. Your friend created a character of a different race? Every starting zone has a waypoint unlocked by default, feel free to join them. Your friend's character is much higher level than yours? Their level and gear will be scaled down to the level of the location to keep it more challenging. Experience is calculated depending on the percentage of your EXP bar, so you (level 15) and your friend (level 65) will both get 15% of your EXP bars for completing an event on a level 10 starting map. There're always events, heart quests, world bosses and hidden locations for you to explore. And after getting your health to zero, you can still continue fighting in downed state and rally from killing an enemy.

In my experience GW2 has very helpful community. You can't even jump from a height and die without someone running to revive you. If you need any help you can always ask in chat and most likely you'll find someone to help. There's also a lot of guilds that help new players. The game has great wiki, you can Shift + Click any item or ability and type /wiki before it to quickly find it on the wiki. ( /wiki [5 Iron Ore] )

After getting to level 80, you should have enough gold and karma to get yourself full Exotic gear that has only 5% less stats than Ascended/Legendary gear, the best gear in the game. Now you're good to go anywhere and do pretty much anything. That's it, you're geared up. The next step is to get ascended trinkets with LW2 currencies or Laurels and when you save up some gold, craft yourself set of ascended armor, it will take you couple of weeks if you play a lot.

Making stuff clear about F2P and expansions.

For free you'll be able to play (with small limitations) only core GW2 content. But considering that people were paying for it $60 in 2012, it's a good deal, if you ask me. If you want to get any content released after 2015, you'll need to buy expansions and Living World seasons.

Guild Wars 2 (Core game) (Free) -> Living World Season 1 (Free) -> Living World Season 2 -> Heart of Thorns (Expansion) -> Living World Season 3 -> Path of Fire (Expansion) -> Living World Season 4 -> Living World: The Icebrood Saga -> End of Dragons (Expansion).

Living World seasons were released episodically between the expansions, each episode usually having a new location and continuing the main story. Those episodes were given away for free if you logged in the game when they were released. If you missed them, they cost gems to get. Overall Living World seasons contain amount of story content comparable to all three expansions combined. For some reasons developers didn't make it clear and obvious enough that without Living World seasons you'll miss ~50% of the story. (You can always buy Living World seasons in the gemshop separately, but getting a complete bundle is cheaper).

My overall recommendation is to try F2P, finish personal story and Living World Season 1 (it's free) and if you like the game, get the complete bundle with Living World seasons, it will be cheaper this way.

What a waste of potential. If Starbound had received at least one third of the post launch support Terraria got, it would've been one of the best games in the genre.

It's still a decent game and has a lot of mods. Get it on sale.

It won't ever be finished and it's not even a good game. Skip it.
