I'm currently approaching 9000 hours on this game and I do not personally consider that time to be wasted. Vanilla Garry's mod not including multiplayer or addons is quite fun on it's own and probably worth it's modest price. However, this game really shines with it's vast modding community and large amount of accessible multiplayer servers which often contain experiences unique to gmod alongside recreations of other games such as a game mode based off of the zombie mode from call of duty. I don't particularly know what much to say about it other than you'll have to tolerate the source engine's decade old physics and graphics, but I don't think that's that much to ask especially when you can change just about anything you don't like through addons while also being able to build your own creations in game and play a variety of gamemodes that a lot of which could honestly be their own games entirely.
