18 December: 20XX.

I am still completely oblivious to what has caused the great HL2.exe cataclysm. My research is nearing completion, yet at the same time I feel as though I'm moving backwards...
The days tick by as I find survivors, barely standing, most of the time they never make it back from the trip. I supply to them whatever rations I carry upon my person. The water is tainted and is too risky to consume.
Tainted... a strange word for a man of science such as me.
Venomous would suit it better you'd think to yourself. Poisoned? Contaminated perhaps? Quite an unruly term for something so unnatural, so.. magical... beyond belief or comprehension.

I welcome those who do survive to my humble abode, now built from the scrap of what was the streets of our amazing civlization.. The Fortress of Teams.
Their cries litter my hallways as they fight the memories of all they have lost, their homes, their families... Their minds.

Truth be told, I do not welcome them for the purpose of survival, nor for the continuation of the human race. I adopt them for the purpose of study.
A scholar such as I would never pass up the chance to disect the way these.. well, what used to be people, process information, how they think and how they see the world through those eyes of theirs, filled with hatred and pain.

I did, however discover something rather strange.
It would appear that the slightest appearance, a glance if you will, for simply a brief moment of an insect or bug will send them into a raging episode, after which they must be contained until whatever creature has been removed from the premises.

On multiple occassions I have returned to their rooms with eerie writing on the walls.
Among the scrawlings I have made out a few minor messages.
They appear as so in order of discovery;
"The bug was here, it will be back!"
"You did this!"
"Val-[scribbles, unable to read]-ix this, they will"
"Crash kaboom kaboom cras-[more scribbled script, assumed to be repetition]-sh KABOOM!"

Outside of the strange occurences such as these, they seem to go about their lives as simple humans just trying to get past all this and continue forwards.
I have no idea what has caused this or where it will lead, nor do I acknowledge the fact that my research will lead me to the heart of this disaster.
Somehow, I feel an overwhelming sense of guilt, like somehow my documents and work from years back has led up to this point in time...

I suppose we'll just have to wait and see...
