Brief, Bulleted Non-Steam Review: Werewolf: The Apocalypse - Earthblood

+ Uhh...sprinting around in wolf form is kinda fun?

- Poor usage of WtA lore...if I wasn't moderately knowledgeable about the World of Darkness, I would have been very, very lost and confused as the game doesn't explain things properly, well, or in an interesting manner
- Treehugging
- Cliche/uninteresting plot
- Unlikable characters
- Boring sidequests
- Collectibles for upgrades just seem to be there to slow down the player from getting this mess over with
- Crossbow is the only weapon you can use, and it's only decent...but you can't use enemy machineguns, pistols, shotguns, mech/exo-suits, etc...just "because"

I did not like this one at all, and the World of Darkness is one of my favorite fictional settings. I love VtM and wanted a cool WtA experience to help broaden my horizons, but this game was boring, uninteresting, and a chore to play. I do not recommend it at all.

Brief, Bulleted Non-Steam Review: Tales of Legendia

+ Several great songs
+ Main quest is less of a time-hog than in some JRPGs

- Graphically awful even for the year it came out (2D with good, detailed sprites > bad 3D)
- Juvenile at times even for a JRPG
- Protagonist is forcefully shipped with an almost universally-hated character despite having chemistry with a rather likeable character
- Disliked almost all party members...that's *really* bad for a Tales game
- Only one town and it's annoying to navigate
- Apparently half the game is character side quests only accessible AFTER end credits roll...but if you hate the characters that far in, you'd be crazy to bother doing them
- Fairly forgettable villains
- Dissatisfying/uninteresting plot
- Annoying magic-learning system, you may completely miss some spells without a guide

This is one of my least favorite Tales games I've played. I do not recommend it, though just checking out the soundtrack online is worth it for a few songs.

Brief, Bulleted Non-Steam Review: Remnant: From the Ashes (Epic Game Store (got it FREE because I don't give those devils money)

+ Attractive locations
+ Fun combat against normal enemies
+ Easy to understand weapon/armor upgrades
+ Traits (skill points) seem to be infinitely accrued with the same XP cost to get each point

- Mini-bosses are amped-up normal enemies who spawn in tons of annoying minions, every time
- Locations are unattractive for several hours in
- Game proposes character classes, but gear the melee class is garbage against the final boss unless you use guns antithetical to the types of guns the game proposes for him/her; I could not beat the final boss with Scrapper's weapons despite using the same loadout the rest of the entire game
- Almost all story elements are in journals, few and far between

I can't abide by a game that touts classes and balances them horribly to the point that the final boss is impossible with gear I used to beat everything else in the game.
Mr. Matt May 18, 2020 @ 11:45am
Brief, Bulleted Non-Steam Review: Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order (PC)

+ Best lightsaber combat I've ever beheld in a game
+ The Force used for Metroidvania purposes works excellently
+ Despite the new trilogy, this story made me think Star Wars might not be beyond redemption
+ I really liked the protagonist, his allies, and the main antagonist of the game
+ Skill system works pretty well and encourages a little grind without going overboard

- Character I found most interesting is recruited last and doesn't get enough screen time
- Fast travel between meditation/save points when story permits should have been allowed
- The Force is very often useless on the enemies that are tough to kill with lightsabers
- Metroidvania gameplay is awesome but drags the story pacing to a screeching halt

This game makes me think maybe Star Wars can be enjoyable once more, after The Last Jedi made me give up on Star Wars. This game kinda gave me...A New Hope? =p
Mr. Matt Jul 31, 2019 @ 11:31pm
Brief, Bulleted Non-Steam Review: Tales of Xillia 2 (PS3)

+ Combat felt better than the first Xillia to me and bosses were less annoying due to not seeming to have as much HP as in the original
+ Playable characters had the best side quests I've ever seen in a Tales game so far, tailored personally to them with story arcs that were meaningful or fun
+ Leveling up is more rewarding here in my opinion
+ Story is about magic but has a sci-fi quality (alternate dimensions, etc.)

- Same maps as in Xillia 1 with very rare exceptions
- Money is pointless and 99% of it goes to covering a debt
- Constant harassment by an NPC after every 1-3 battles the second you earn enough money for a debt payment, even if you just made a payment 1 minute ago; real-world debts are less troublesome than this
- I despised the main endings
- Grind for SP to equip skills by killing random monsters is absurd

Great gameplay and side quests, but the main endings left a terrible taste in my mouth.
Mr. Matt Jan 10, 2019 @ 10:49pm
Brief, Bulleted Non-Steam Review: Tales of Xillia (PS3)

Note: I completed this one and every side quest I found except for 2 collectibles in an unmarked set of 23.

+ Combat feels great for the most part
+ Leveling up shops is fun and not tedious like I felt it was in Graces F
+ I liked the story better than Zestiria's

- Many repetitive/uninspired environments
- Less side characters I liked than in most Tales games
- Boss fights really drag on even when over-leveled and using the boss' weakness (bloated defense and HP)
- I didn't like most of the villains in the game
- One party member betrays you MANY times and is endlessly forgiven without good reasons
- Level ups quickly felt tedious and tempt you to just use "auto-level"
- Forgettable music...I just beat the game and can remember maybe 3 songs and don't like them
- Less "feels" for me here than in most Tales games
- I prefer the lore in every other Tales game I've played (except maybe Graces F)

Over all I liked it, though. =p

Brief, Bulleted Non-Steam Review: Tales of Graces F (PS3)

Note: I got about 25 hours or so into the game (between 750 and 1000 battles won) before quitting in some desert ruins.

+ Some pleasant music
+ Attractive menus

- Didn't like most of the characters (I met all the characters and don't care much about them)
- Repeat jokes that got stale for me
- Simple political story that was boring me far more than Zestiria's
- Combat relies on memorization of various 4-button combos; deepest combat system of any Tales game but doesn't make it harder...just makes it take really long, annoying amounts of time to kill non-trash enemies
- Boring world (environments rarely look interesting, the events and lore didn't interest me, etc.)
- Micromanagement leveling hell (not enough room here...watch a YouTube video about skills if you want to know more)

I do not recommend this game. It's the only Tales game that has bored me so far.
Mr. Matt Oct 3, 2018 @ 8:02pm
Brief, Bulleted Non-Steam Review: Resonance of Fate (PS3)

Note: I could not stand to play this more than an hour before I turned it off for good.

+ Occasional nice orchestral music

- 9 Tutorials to have an understanding of what's going on in the most basic fights
- Style over substance (the opening movies are a good indicator)
- Abrasive music much of the time (I like loads of JRPG songs, normally)
- World map is a small grid, you are a cursor; add hexes to it to move further
- Desaturated color palette; visually disgusted me
- Countdown to control each character, more domineering over the player than Valkyria Chronicles in my opinion
- NPCs and PCs were completely disinteresting to me...most Tales and FF games do better in 5 minutes than this does in under an hour

This is not like any JRPG I've played before. I highly recommend you watch a Let's Play on YouTube or rent it before buying blindly.
Mr. Matt Oct 3, 2018 @ 7:24pm
Brief, Bulleted Non-Steam Review: Beyond: Two Souls (PS3)

+ A few exciting action scenes
+ Ghoulish-looking Willem Dafoe as an adoptive science dad who studies you!

- Incredibly sluggish controls in third person (which is 90% or so of the time)
- Willem Dafoe was the only character I really liked
- Overall plot did not interest me
- The entire story is told drastically out of chronological order, most likely to address almost nothing but action in later life and just toddling around as a kid, then the game pretentiously claims story reasons for being told out of order
- Much of the game is just very slow walking around and completing trivial tasks like picking up clothes off the floor, drinking cups of water, etc.
- I thought the game was way too long and should've been a TV miniseries instead of a game

I enjoyed Heavy Rain, B2S got pretty dull for me. Quantic Dream's QTE-fests need to adapt to keep up with story-telling in games.
Mr. Matt Sep 18, 2018 @ 9:28pm
Brief, Bulleted Non-Steam Review: Atelier Rorona: The Alchemist of Arland (PS3)

Note: I only played this one for a couple of hours.

+ Music is catchy.
+ Detailed character portraits during dialog look nice.
+ Alchemy is simple to understand (way better than Tales of Zestiria's crafting).

- Time limit stress. Want to go to a dungeon/forest? Recover HP without items? Craft an item? It costs 1 or more days to do each activity, if you do not craft certain objects in time, the game claims you will lose. The prospect of a lengthy game under stress the whole time takes the fun out of things for me.
- Non-portrait character models were rather meh-looking chibis in my opinion.
- Exploration/combat very bland for me/had no "hook" like it does in Tales and some FF games.
- Forced to pay back debt owed for medicine you bought to save your parents...while they are better dressed than many townsfolk and GO ON FREAKING VACATION instead of helping with the debt and the work.
Mr. Matt Sep 10, 2018 @ 9:09pm
Brief, Bulleted Non-Steam Review: Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World (PS3)

+ Less and easier puzzles. First game's puzzles often made me miserable.
+ Characters have normal proportions, original's "quasi-chibi" proportions are gone.
+ I loved Marta; one of my favorite Tales companions so far.
+ Visiting first game's locations didn't feel like a lame rehash for me (like in FFX-2).
+ The skits/character interactions are great.
+ Shorter and wastes less time than the original.
+ Story didn't get too convoluted.
+ First game's cast returns; great dialog/skits.

- Numerous villains, only one was kinda interesting to me.
- Protagonist is like Hope from FFXIII for too much of the game (wants vengeance, whiny/pathetic).
- Half of your party will likely be random captured monsters. TIP: Get one of the earliest bears you can find. So powerful when evolved.

This is supposed to be one of the worst Tales games ever made, but I really liked this game...more than Tales of Symphonia.
Mr. Matt Sep 9, 2018 @ 9:03pm
Brief, Bulleted Non-Steam Game Review: Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix (PS3, and I did not play the extra games; just the "main" game)

+ Looks good considering it was originally on PS2
+ Authentic-looking/sounding Disney characters
+ Soundtrack is excellent
+ Controls much better than the PS2 version in my opinion

- Relies on "Muh childhood!" appeal: I like a lot of Disney stuff, but putting Disney characters on the screen does not automatically make me like your product
- Platforming is clunky...which I find inexcusable post-NES era when it's a pretty big part of the game
- Story did not appeal to me and I forget it almost immediately; got to the final area of the game, but was too bored/disinterested to want to see what happens
- Final Fantasy characters are shallower versions of themselves

If you love everything Disney and Final Fantasy, this game is likely for you. Otherwise, you might not like this game.
Mr. Matt Sep 9, 2018 @ 8:37pm
Brief, Bulleted Non-Steam Game Review: Persona 5 (PS3)

+ Outrageously stylish/cool visuals and aesthetic
+ Controls pretty darn well
+ Story is presented in a very interesting fashion
+ User Interface is excellent at showing what you need and giving control context
+ Likable characters thus far
+ Modern day setting with surreal/supernatural components

- Mountains of grinding unless you're amazing at JRPGS
- Game is on a timer which removes almost all sense of relaxation/fun for me
- Permanent gimping if you are less than perfect: Leave a Palace because you ran out of SP (MP)? Well, you have to go back later, so you're not boosting relationship stats, and in turn you're not reading a stat-boosting book, etc, etc. You have to be almost perfect or the game gets harder. This is a deal-breaker for me, and it saddens me greatly.

If none of that turns you off, you might love this game!

Thanks for this review of Titanfall 2! Sounds like a good game :steamhappy:
Mr. Matt Feb 25, 2018 @ 9:50pm
Brief, Bulleted Non-Steam Game Review: TITANFALL 2

+ Zero need to play the original (I never did, far as I can tell, no returning characters/plot points (original was MP only).
+ Fun single player, FPS campaign, sci-fi setting.
+ Oodles of guns which all feel pretty different to shoot.
+ On-foot combat, brief cloaking device on a cooldown.
+ Parkour (wall-running/double-jumps with mantling) gives an empowering sensation.
+ Mech/exo-suit combat with lock-on rocket pods and such (more empowerment).
+ Campaign lasts about 6+ hours. I hate games that outstay their welcome, so brevity without feeling like part of the game went missing is great for me.
+ Most maps feel very different from the others, and some were quite cool.

~ Most characters are very one-dimensional. The mech AI is great, and that's it. The top brass baddies have some decent personality "flavor" at least.

- Fairly weak story.

Verdict: Recommended.
