The multiplayer button will be greyed out if the game notices any changes in the game folders to prevent people from cheating by tweaking the game. Concluding that means Steam didn't install the latest patch correctly to your system. There are two possible fixes: a) reinstall the game or b) let Steam check the game caches. b) is the most intelligent and easiest solution in my opinion, by the way.
