The Last Remnant is a pretty darn fun game of its type. it's solid enough to be worth your time if you've taken the time to read this.

I really enjoyed this. As a bakka gaijn I've always found many jrpg story aspects to come across a bit stunted or less than natural, and this game is generally the same, at least when the characters get into long conversations and try to be super dramatic with their fifteen second pauses between sentences. The story itself is standard stuff, but done well enough to keep you from getting bored.

I found the combat to be really a high point of this. It's pretty damn strategic. You HAVE to spend ten or so minutes reading a combat guide describing how everything works, though, if you're going to have any chance of understanding and enjoying it. The group controls are determined by the specific characters (and their focused skills) in each group and is also influenced by their location on the battlefield - relative to the enemies. it's interesting, and never feels repetitive.

You can recruit many different people, kinda like Suikoden, and train them up in different ways, each with their own different bit of story to contribute and it's pretty cool. There's crafting to make weapons and gear and potions and stuff. I thought it was a really pretty game with some cool combat systems and a lot of different quests and people and things to talk to.

This game discourages grinding and over leveling, so be careful not to. If you just play it, you'll be fine.

For the Last Remnant,

http://lastremnant.wikia.com/wiki/The_Last_Remnant_Wiki_-_The_Last_Remnant_Guide ]The Last Remnant Wiki

The Wiki will save your life. Keep that open and feel free to alt-tab out whenever you need to to answer any questions you have. Just after the game 'tutorial' intro go ahead and read about game mechanics from the wiki. You'll be grateful.

Read that, and
http://lastremnant.wikia.com/wiki/Union_Creation_Strategies
then that at least, before you start. The game can be pretty freaking strategic, up to unit/team union placement on the battle map and you will lose often if you treat it like a standard final fantasy game. It's not Tactics Ogre, but positioning is an important thing.

This Youtube Video detailing some basic combat and squad stuff is also a really huge help. The sound is fucked up, so just turn it off and read the subtitles.
