Thomas Was Alone is an amazing example of design in video games. Everything meshes; the aesthetic, story, and game mechanics all feel inextricably mixed together, but it all hinges on the story. Good thing it's extremely well-written.

This isn't a game you play when you want to have a good time.

It's a game you play when you're sick of all the gore-spattered glory. This game is one of the most draining experiences I've encountered in gaming. And I didn't even pick the hardest difficulty.
