Apotheon is one of many 2D platform games, but with its visual style, it creates an unique experience for all gamers to enjoy.
If this review is too long for you, I suggest you to only read the first paragraph about the game's content and the final verdict at the end.

Note: I played this game when I was on vacation with no internet so playtime and achievements were not registered for some reason. It was a nice vacation, though.

What is happening in the game:
Greek Gods have abandoned the humanity and it's up to you to fight against the gods, take their power and ensure the humanity to survive.

Pros:
  • It will be the first you'll notice and the best thing you'll notice: how the game looks. It's just like those ancient vases and amphorae that you see in museums. I never expected this style to fit this well into the game, but it really looks perfect.
  • The combat mechanics are really enjoyable, you get to try a lot of different weapons like swords and spears (those really long ones).
  • The music is really nice, it fits the environment well and kind of sets you to ancient times. Really nice.
  • Another thing I did not expect in a game is the way it shows spoken text. It shows you the entire thing someone is going to say and it colours the letters as they are spoken, just like in karaoke.
  • You can smash mostly anything you can come across, all the boxes, vases and stuff like that. They can sometimes include coins or other valuables, so it's a good idea to smash everything.
  • There are not only weapons in this game, but it also has a pretty nice shield system. When you hold right click, a large shield pops up in from of you and you can direct it with your mouse. Unique and very useful.
  • You get a lot of weapons and other things in game and this game manages your inventory extremely well. You can keep everything you pick up with no limits, but most of the things "expire" after you use them for some time.
  • Linux and MacOS support. Just the way things should be.

Cons:
  • Combat system is great in my opinion, but it takes a bit of getting used to it before you master it. I know this is bothering to most people, so I'm listing it here.
  • Sometimes, I feel like there are way to many things on the screen or at least the rich visuals give that feeling. It's not that bad, though.

The final verdict:
This game is awesome, no questions about it. The visual style itself is almost worth the price, but with the story and music, this is not a game you want to miss. I enjoyed it a lot (again, my playtime did not count, see the note at the top) and it definitely has replayability potential just because it feels so good when you play it. Take a look at the screenshots and you'll know what I'm talking about.
I know 15$ is a lot to some people, but really, consider buying it or at least grab it when it's discounted. It's a really unique and charming experience.

Greetings,
BirdCute
