I would have preferred a better reviewing system that would allow me to moderate my point, but this will have to do. If I had to give an honest opinion of whether or not you should get the game, I would say that it depends of what you're looking for, as well as how patient you are. This game actually came pretty close to a good recommendation for me : you're relatively free to do what you want, you can customize your ship on several aspects, you have multiplayer, if you're into that stuff... It doesn't look half bad either, the menus are clear and precise, the gameplay is pretty good, and the combat in particular is quite involving.

The game does suffer from a few flaws, though, one of them being fatal in my eyes. The first one is that even though you can customize you ship, the different modules you get are nothing more than upgraded versions of what you already have. What I mean is that you don't have the choice between a shield that's very strong and one that's less strong, but recharges quickly, that sort of thing. You just have "small shield that's not great but will fit on small frames", and it gets bigger from that.

Another flaw, this one more important : ennemies aren't all that smart, and seem to have access to an unlimited supply of missiles, or at least that's the impression I get. Combat isn't bad in itself, but make one mistake and you're likely to get blown up, so it encourages a sort of "jousting" pattern that can get repetitive. Your fights will be pretty much the same every time.

Last problem I have with this game, and this one is what made me give it a negative recommendation : the reputation system is absolute garbage. So, you have several factions in this game, and doing contracts for them or destroying their ships will impact it. Okay. But your reputation in a sector won't carry over to another, it's just for THAT sector. That means that you can (WILL, if you're following the plot) stumble on sectors where the Navy don't like you. At all. They don't know you, they don't know where you're from, or what you want, but boy do they know they want you dead. And we're not talking about pirates, we're talking about the NAVY. So pretty much every ship you'll come across here are hostiles. You'll want to bribe them, but they won't answer your trade requests. And here comes the REALLY dumb part : you'll want to do a few contracts for them, but for that, you'll have to dock in the station while everyone is trying to kill you, then pay a fee to even be able to bring up the contracts menu, then leave the station without getting shot down on the way out, then reach the mission waypoint. And do you think they'll stop shooting you just because you accepted to do their work ? ♥♥♥♥ no, don't be insane. Good luck trying to do your mission while having to fend off unlimited waves of hostiles and their flood of missiles. And good luck trying to get a good rep with those guys if you have to blow their ships up while doing THEIR job that THEY gave you. Not that you really CAN, since you won't last long against 15 bad guys and their unlimited reinforcements...

I really wanted to like that game, it had so much potential... But as you can see, despite the apparent choice you have to decide what you'll want to be, you'll get shoehorned into investing in weapons and strong shields to even have a chance. That, or ignore the sectors where everyone and their mother will try to kill you for no reason, but that's just really, really dumb...

psinak --> No idea, haven't really touched the game since then. The X series seems like a better experience overall, even though I find it a bit lacking in term of ship customization. You do get a LOT of choice in terms of the ships themselves, though, so it makes up for it. Elite Dangerous also seems very promising, especially once all the promised content gets released. The final game might actually shape up to be all I wanted from a space sim, or close.

Were these issues ever addressed and fixed?

Take Borderlands, for example, I know it's a strange example but it's actually pretty close to what I'm saying. You have several weapon manufacturers : Jakobs make powerful weapons, but with a slow rate of fire, Hyperion make very accurate weapons that are rather "meh" in everything else, some manufacturers will make shields that are less powerful but recharge quickly... You know, not only different strength for the weapons and shields, but also different kind of weapons and shields altogether, with different purposes.

Regarding the shield, well if I remember correctly in the shipyard there's really only one stat for it (not counting assembly) and it's pretty much strength. I do have the inventory item that increases shield, as well as the one that increases energy for my weapons, but that isn't really the point, the problem is that the customization is pretty limited in terms of modules and parts. You can take the engine, too, it's the same thing. A bigger engine will be bigger, it will make your ship go faster (at the price of more fuel, but still), but that's it.

Concerning the missiles, once again they aren't a lethal danger to me, I actually only got it once or twice by a missile because I was being clumsy. Every time a missile is fired, I just push the Inertials and turn around to shoot it. I always do that, and it always works. The problem I have with missiles is that they're a nuisance, it looks like it's pretty much the only thing the enemies got. I'm spending 90% of the time shooting missiles in combat, which isn't really thrilling. Yes, I could indeed invest in counter-measures and automatic systems, but last time I checked I couldn't fit nearly enough of those in my ship for them to actually be efficient, considering all I do in combat is basically dealing with missiles. The automatic systems also use up counter-measures, right ? Unless this Anti-Missile System is actually something cost-efficient that I would want ? I don't remember having seen anything of the sort, but then again I might not know everything...

I can fight a dozen enemies, but I won't have the fuel nor the skill to deal with their unlimited reinforcements for more than 15 minutes. If I did anything to upset the Navy and the other factions in the sector, I would understand that, because it would be logical to get gang-raped in that case, but the Navy just decided that it didn't want me in the sector for some reason and actively tried to kill me despite not knowing me at all. I did a bit of research in how the faction worked on the Internet, and I really get the impression the whole thing has just not been thought through. The only way I could see that would enable me to do anything would be to invest heavily into weapons, which is a little counter-intuitive in a game that is supposed to let you do what you want, especially since as I said the whole situation had no reason to happen other than the poorly made reputation system. And it was happening in Sierra, actually. ^^

Thanks for taking the time to answer constructively ! However, you're apparently assuming that I'm very fresh to the game and struggling to grasp the mechanisms. While I'm obviously not the best player in the world, I can actually fight ten ships with a fair chance of winning, which is decent I think. The problem isn't in how difficult the combat is, I'm doing pretty decently, the problem is that I'm basically stuck in the game for no apparent reason because of a poorly done system that pits me against an always increasing number of enemies until I finally die.

Point 1 : It existing the shield you can upgrade in the shypyard and the one you can buy and stock in your equipment. The one in you equipment increase the reserve capacity so the strengh of your shield. The basic one is the number 1 and the maximum are number 5. If you still not happy with that strengh you can hire a engineer who will basicaly improve your subsystem and your repair hul speed.

Point 2 : Your right Red fire missiles unlimited but you have many way to face them. First red starting firing missil under a certain distance to you. Second you can equip your ship with some hardpoint equipment as Auto CM launcher or Anti Missiles system. third (who's probably the best and the most efficient) fire with your particules cannon on them will destroy them imediatly.

Point 3 : About the Faction it as been discussed in many subject but this is the most recent one with the most complet answer. I invite you have a look of it on the official forum : http://www.starwraith.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=11351#pid169935 .

Fighting is the things the most tecniq and who will take the most time to learn in this game. Do not expect know how to fighter a few hour for sure. The best way how to do it will be maybe join online and doing cooperative mission with a Veteran player. I garanti you may learn a couple of things and you will see and just a moment you will find the Ai too easy !
