Spirit's Servers - Where fun still matters!

Home to what was once the most fun, chaotic, and entertaining TF2 community.

As the previous description said, "They were made for fun, with almost no rules in mind, and most importantly - with no conflicting administration, no teenage staff, no lag, and not overflowing with plugins."

After a near continuous 10 years of operation, the servers have been shut down for an indefinite period of time.

Check in once in a while, maybe some day you'll be able to join your old friends and snipe someone with a rocket on 10x surf, deal the most fair crit on orange, or flood the achievement map to everyone's confusion again.

It's time

Yesterday I got an email from the server host with a message saying the hard drive of the machine that was running everything has failed catastrophically. Thankfully, we have backups, and on top of that they were able to recover ~90% of the information that was on the hard drive.

With that said, the servers aren't going to be coming back online.

TF2's custom server community has been slowly and steadily crushed by Valve's preference for matchmaking, the number of cheaters, and the generally slowly decaying interest of this game.

Over the course of the past ~10 years, me and several long-term community staff poured countless hours and even more countless thousands of dollars into maintaining these servers. I think I can speak for most of us when I say that we've reached a point where it's no longer engaging or motivating, and the community that was once extremely lively is mostly gone.

All the files have been backed up. All the databases, player statistics like ranks and play time, have been archived.

After weighing the cost and time it takes to maintain the servers with their declining popularity, I've come to the conclusion that the sunset is somewhat overdue.

We built an amazing community. One that managed to propel itself from a bunch of tiny, empty servers to literally #1 in worldwide ranks on multiple websites, continuously, for months at a time.

But we have to accept that those moments are in the past now, and it's time to take a break.

Man, can you believe it's been almost 10 years since this all started?

Will the servers ever come back? I'd like them to, some day. I don't know when that day will be, but I can say with certainty that it won't be in the near future.

No more advertisements

Since the advertisements have recently been more of an annoyance than a way to support the servers, I've decided to completely remove them.

I'll be covering the server costs entirely out of pocket from now on, since the donations are also on hold, due to the current "political situation".

Had some good times in these servers, even though my ping was always through the roof. I have extremely fond memories of the surf server.

Here I met my friends, for a time I also donated to the servers, the best days of my life. A memory that brings nostalgia to my heart, I will forever miss entering the considered "orange" Everything was incredible, happiness was not considered, everything is happy until something that is valued is gone. All that remains is to thank all the administrators of the Spirit servers for their work who for years were dedicating themselves to this server that became a community.

After a hiatus and a return to Team Fortress, I was saddened to hear the servers are no longer in operation. Spirit servers defined a distinct period of time in my teenage years, and the joy from those servers will never go unnoticed. As Spirit said, perhaps one day we can all join back on the surf server like the good ol' times. Until then my friends...

I was wondering if the website was able to save and record all the player stats, it would be pretty dope to see.
