Seriously, blaming this on miscommunication is a bit of a misnomer, right? No amount of communication can prevent you from running out of money about 1/10th of the way through your development plan.
The reason early access games worked before was that people didn't know what it was - the idea had no history, so people bought in if they thought it was cool.
Then developers like you happened, tarnishing the idea of early access and burning countless buyers.
And even now there is probably a development team looking at some of the early greats and thinking "This could work!", only to run out of money because people understandably do no longer want to throw their money into the void of Early Access. :(
Yet Bethesda has done that for every Elder Scrolls after Morrowind, less features because they know the modders will fill in the gaps and restore stripped out features.
"Сначала стулья, потом деньги"
This being abandoned will probably turn people off of doing anything "Early Access" with Double Fine. .. If Early Access is done properly it can be good both for the dev and consumer, but if miss managed / miss handled it can be really bad for both.
Holy crap there was like 6 main alpha updates spanding over a year and the game is being finished off?
How did they not make money from this? The game isn't even that complex, it costs a fortune ($25) and i've seen a single developer make more impressive stuff without making squat. I legit have no idea how they got themselves into losing money from this, i'm not even sure if I believe that it is true.
They seriously must have paid a team of 10 to drink coffee all day, it's the only thing i can think of.
