Castle Crashers xbox controller not working!

So i downloaded a thing that is supposed to make my wired controller work for my game on my mac. i know it works because when i go to system preferences and click on the controller icon all the buttons respond and the sticks and d pad work fine! but when i go to play castle crashers it doesnt work at all! its very annoying. i played it on my PC and the controller works fine on that so i know the game allows controllers. please help!
