question about windows
when games recommend windows 7 , will they also work with windows 8 ?

Yes it will

What it means is that: the minimum os it will be able to run on, if it says win 7 but you have win 8, It will be more then happy.

The original Windows 8 got many incompatibility issues with older hardware and games. However most of this got fixed in Win 8.1
Generally, as long you don't want play 15 year old games, anything not too old should run on 8.1 just as on 7.

It should run just fine, i'm currently using Windows 8 and so far every steam game i own has run without major problems.

you can browse game customer support page to see if windows 8 is supported.
if it not supported, windows OS has this feature: compatiblity mode.
you can set the game to run in compatiblity mode (ie. windows 7 sp1, windows vista sp2, windows xp sp3, etc)
