Steam needs to be online to update. Please check you're network connection.
OK so 6 days ago i tried to log into steam and it wouldent, it just kept not responding.
So i unistalled steam and reinstalled it. That worked fine, but when it is dowloading the 110.268KB update i get this message:

STEAM NEEDS TO BE ONLINE TO UPDATE. PLEASE CHECK YOU'RE NETWORK CONNECTION.

These are the things i have done to try solve this issue with no luck.

1. I have checked my McAfee firewall and it allows Steam to have full access.

2. I have checked my router and it is compatible with steam.

3. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Steam numerous times.

4. I have Deleted all the files in the steam file except for Steamapps, userdata and Steam.exe, then restarted my computer and launched steam through the Steam.exe in the instilation folder.

5. I have gone to regedit to see if Steams offline mode was set to 1. but i do not even have an offline mode to veiw.

6. I have checked the ports of my router and they all allow Steam. I have also reset my router and turned it off for 10sec.

7. I have sent a ticket to Steam Support and they just told me to do what i did do in no.1 and no.4 and no.2 and no.6. It took them 4 days to reply with that solution wich i already did, so i sent them a reply and its been another 3 days for them to reply and STILL COUNTING...

8. I have checked my Window Update History to find that Ralink update that some people on these forums have mentioned to roll back to a previos update, but i do not have such an update because i am not on a wireless network. But there were a bunch of security updates that were installed the same day i noticed this issue. most of them are : Security Update For Microsoft .Net FrameWork 4. Client Profile.

9. I have run a virus scan and detected nothing.

10. I have punched the wall many times almost braking my fist.

The only other thing i can think of, is that i've gone past my data usage by 10gb so the internet is slow at this point.Surely this cannot be the issue though.
Please Help.

Same exact issue currently online i had uninstalled mine because of it continuously asking me to update (and it wouldn't). I put in a support ticket about it 2-3 days ago and no reply yet , in the mean time i asked a friend who has steam for a copy of his steam whiles since his work , it lets me open steam and run games that way at least but i get missing dll and error messages, plus it still wants me to update ..again so its not fool proof n ink if i'll be able to play games for an extended period of time.

Soooo, did you ever get a solution? Or find one yourself? I have been having the same problem for the past three days and Valve simply will not help me. Their Steam "support" has been either utterly silent, or insulting my intelligence by giving me no brainer solutions such as "check your network connection", or "Restart your computer and try again".

So did you find a way to fix it?

it was my internet providers fault, i rang them up, found out their system crashed and they created a patch to fix it and now i can connect to steam again. but i think it only effected people from NZ cause thats where im from.

They also told me if you're internt slows down to a crawl like dial up speed, you cant connect to some programs because it needs fast internet. has you're internet slowed down recently?

Got it fixed. sorta anyway. I needed to go into the the msconfig and stop all the start-up programs, then unchecked a lot of run time programs to get it to update. I'm hoping this wont need to be done every time i need to update Steam. But I suppose I'll find out.

Here is what I did, I deleted steam completely except the folder with installed games and I installed Steam into default directory, I was using D drive because of lack of space on C drive. Took some time but working now. Even if this helps 1 person, I am glad.

This has been going on for a few months for me. I am about to lose my mind.

alright, now I've found the answer to this big issue. What I did (and worked for me) was: copied the steamapps folder somewhere else, downloaded Steam in another pc, then copied the files to my pc and steamapps to my steam folder.
Now steam will work but will not have access to steam servers, for this:
"Exit Steam.
Click Start > Run (or Windows Key + R)
Type inetcpl.cpl and click OK.
Click the Connections tab.
Click the LAN settings button.
If any items on this window are checked, uncheck them.
Click OK to close any open windows and restart your computer.

Hope it worked.
