Subscription fee
Is it me or does the fee seem a bit high for STO? Even WoW is cheaper.

Ive spend a few hours on this gmae and really like it. So a bit of support is problaby something I can give in return. So I checked the difference between free players and subscribers.
Sofar the difference isnt that big to justify almost 15euro's....or am I missing something?

STO's monthly fee is $14.99 a month. A standard that has been set for nearly a decade now. I dn't see it anymore expensive than any other game you can sub to.

As to whether you can justify the sub or not is up to your perception.

If you sub you get:

1 Billion EC limit per character

Automatic Dilithium Refinement.

4 Character slots

+2 Bridge Officer Slots per character

Maximum inventory space is set at 72, rather than 42 for FTP

Maximum bank account space is 108 rather than 48 for FTP

Free account shared bank slots

A Captain retrain token at every rank for free

Total access to the foundry to create missions for others to play (if you are creative)

The typical full access to Fleets, chatting and in-game mail

As well as 500 Z-points every month to spend in the Z-store. Which these promotional points stack monthly.

STO is known as one of the lesser restrictive FTP MMO's out there. But I've subscribed since before the game was released and I haven't regretted it.

$15 was pretty much the standard subscription fee before F2P took over the market. Many games charge that much and require you to purchase the game it self (STO was this way at launch). I can't say whether or not it's worth it since I'm just starting, but it's a pretty standard fee. IIRC WoW cost the same back when I played (Vanilla-BGs), and I'd imagine they dropped the price when their subs started going down significantly. Less popular MMOs probably couldn't afford to do the same.

That said, I haven't played a single PWE game that they haven't messed up big time in one way or another (usually by renting the cheapest servers possible), so I'm wary of paying them a full-priced subscription.

I'll also say that in some games that have gone F2P post-launch, such as Star Wars: The Old Republic, individual micro transactions are a better value for your money than paying the sub. I subbed to SW:TOR, and when my sub lapsed I lost access to like half the game. Had I spent my $15/mo on micro transactions instead of the subscription I would have permanently unlocked all the features I wanted. Again, I'm new to STO, so this may not apply. Just wanted to share.

I'm pretty sure that a lot of those bonuses you get from the Gold membership are active even when you do not have a Gold account. IE get Gold for one month, have all your characters take the full advantage of it, then do not pay for Gold anymore and you will retain some of the bonuses (like extra inventory, I believe). @OP you are entirely right, there is VERY little reason to pay for STO every month, and that is why it's one of the better F2P, seeing as it gives you most of what is desirable (other than ships :P )

Well combining my passion for gaming with basic economics I see little reason to subscribe as a potential downfall (perhaps a bit of a strong word but hey..).

Giving people a good reason to pay monthly (mind you that forcing people by making the F2P model terrible is not what I mean) will secure the future and make the game more healthy.

Im all for supporting games but it needs to be more worth it then what I see now. This is ofcourse my own opinion, perhaps someone else sees the benefits as totally worth it.
you do get to keep almost all of the stuff from gold, account bank the extra space and other stuff. which is really cool i recommend getting it even if it just for 1 month and after it over you get to keep some cool stuff
