Star Trek Online

Price to play?
Is 5-10 bucks a month enough to enjoy the game? Some times the "free to play" games are more expesive than the monthly pay model.

Yup, its more than enough. u will prob start to spend money when u hit the max level, because after that, u need money to unlock better ships and other end game items.

Thats not entirely right. You can grind EVERYTHING with the exception of lifetimer bonuses. Sure grinding 2000+ Zen for a ship takes a while, but its entirely possible to get the best stuff here without paying a penny. So no, you do NOT need money. But its more convenient of course.
I just got the game up and running, looks like the biggest thing you need money for (and at a high price of 5 bucks) is respecing. The game seems to have built in "your new, here is a respec every few levels", but it looks like you have to be some kind of paid member.
I have a problem with this, games that charge you for being new kind of piss me off; but the gameplay and story line are both deep and involving. Guess I will throw a few bucks on the account and see where they go.

An advice: buy AT LEAST one month of subscription, it unlocks inventory, ships, bridge officers slots and money/dilithium cap forever.

^^^ This.

Plus if you do that at the beginning of the character's life, you get 1 respec per promotion. At the end you should have 7 respec tokens. You really don't have to respec a whole lot in this game unless you're switching ships constantly. AND even then, only if you need sci space powers.
I've got 300+ hours and am level 50. I still play this quite a lot, and I've never spent a penny. You can enjoy the game easily without spending anything. The problem I have is that anything that's going to make much difference (ships for example) cost a lot, whereas cheap items tend to be cosmetic.

Most other MMO's my friends with no money got left behind or couldnt access areas. I am happy to say STO is not like that and I hope it never is.

One of the few free to play games where you can compete at the highest levels without spending a penny. The default ships can still compete well when equiped with good gear. Plus a few times a year you can get special ships for free just for doing a little in game work. Like the recently released Risa Corvette http://youtu.be/cML_VROf8A0
