There are also career choices that appear in missions, that correspond to your chosen career (Engineer, Science, Tactical) which usually offer new routes in a mission.
But there really isn't any long lasting effects from dialog choices.
Feel free to read below if you want more info, if not, then feel free to ignore the rest of my post:
For example, let's take the current Featured Episode: Step Beyond The Stars.
At one point, you have to choose which approach to take with the stations defenses. There are 3 options: Beams, Swarmers, No support.
- If you reply 'Beams', it triggers some floor beams which can damage both you and the Voth, which you must avoid. This also determines which model of EV suit you equip during the episode.
- If you you reply 'Swarmers', it triggers some floating swarmers which can damage both you and the Voth, which you must eventually destroy. This also determines which model of EV suit you equip during the episode.
- If your reply 'No Support', it triggers neither, and you fight the Voth without any station defenses. This also determines which model of EV suit you equip during the episode.
The only long term effects that it will have (as far your play experience goes - in other words, ignoring accolades/achievement) is that it will determine which EV suit you get - but you can always play through again to get the others, if you wish.
NONE of the above options include: Betray Starfleet and join the Voth, Punch Dr Cooper in his stupid face and work the consoles yourself, suggest that the fleet 'tractor beam' the station and move it wherever they want.
*To answer what I think is your actual question*: You will never be ALLOWED to make a decision that will result in you losing a rank, or being captured by Borg and assimilated, or your ship being taken from you, or anything permanent like that. Your character will never 'die' or become unusable (althought you can run out of health and be forced to respawn on the current map, of course), and you cannot lose abilities - or anything like that, no matter what dialogue choices you make, EVER. Well, except for...
*THE ONE EXCEPTION TO THIS RULE: When you're a Romulan, you'll eventuallly need to choose to ally with either the Federation, or the Klingons. THIS determines which 'faction' will let you use their ships (up until max level- you can only use the max-level Rom ships, you may not use any other factions Tier 5 ships.) and will influence many other factors. THIS decision can NEVER be undone for the character that chooses it, but you can still choose the other faction for any other Romulan characters on your account. In other words, the choice is bound to the character that makes it, not the account that it's made from.*
From a certain angle, one could say that this means that STO is not technically a role-playing game. You are rarely given the option to NOT attack, but sometimes you can choose WHO to attack. This is not a very 'Star Trekky' choice, I feel.
Consider it a Star Trek themed MMO with minimal player influence, and you'll be fine. :)
Also, I believe that in "Spin the Wheel" you need to talk the Ferengi barkeeper Belan into making a deal, rather than threatening him, which would also lead to mission failure.
This was exactly what i was looking for. the Difference between yellow and blue colored. But the other responses have been read and stored in my memory banks aswell. :)
Ty all.
