Sound dims in-game on MP - what gives?

Don't think happened in Win 7 but upgraded recently to Win 8 and having the following problem. I'm playing Xbox Music app in the background and launch MTG. All is good in the menus, but as soon as I launch a MP game sound dims by about 80%. Its not just the Xbox Music that dims but the in-game sound effects too - what gives?

In windows 7 there was a setting in communications or some such that would dim the sounds of games etc. and since D.O.T.P. has built in voice communications it could be that. If the means of changing this is the same as windows 7:

1) Type sound in the search field in the 'start' menu.
2) Click the 'sound' option headed with 'control panel'
3) Click the 'communications' tab, and select 'do nothing'.

I did that and it didn't work so I disabled my mic in hardware and I think that's fixed it
