Overall, I enjoyed Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns the most, but I could easily see why someone would find Kohan 2 better.
I'd also recommend buying the entire package, though not necessarily at full price (ie, wait for a sale). You can probably find a Kohan 2 demo somewhere and play that for a while. It allows multiplayer with AI (and maybe other people...IIRC) so it would give you an idea of what K2 is.
