DOOM 3 or BFG

i've played DOOM (so much), DOOM 2, FINAL DOOM, and recently a decent amount of BRUTAL DOOM... but i never played DOOM 3.

so it comes down to the age old question, and i'd like to make my decision based on the opinions of the players: should i play DOOM 3 or DOOM 3: BFG?

graphics aren't an issue for me. it seems like there is a lot of fuss about which one has the better, though both look gorgeous, especially for 2004. the lighting being a large part of the argument. i would prefer the one with better graphics, but if this will negatively effect the gameplay, then n/m.

as hinted, gameplay stands above all. i know there are differences. which has the better in ur opinion and why?

some things i'm curious of are issues. any bugs or glitches in BFG that aren't in the original or vice versa? does the original have trouble running on Windows 7?

any additional info provided will help as well, so share whatever u wish. i'll be posting this at the BFG hub as well.

I don't have the BFG edition but I do have the original Doom 3. I'd recommend getting the original instead, I've heard many bad things about the BFG edition. It made many changes to the game, and they had a negative impact on it according to many fans. For example, they took out the flashlight mechanic, so now you can shoot while the flashlight is on. In addition to that, the game is considerably brighter.

These are widely regarded as bad changes. The flashlight mechanic in the original wasn't an oversight, it was an intentional design choice. Some people may have not liked it but for many it added an interesting dynamic to the game and added a lot to the horror. Without that mechanic, the game is just a generic shooter, and any semblance of horror is gone. The brighter levels only make that worse.

If you buy the original it might be a bit of a pain to set up. You'll have to manually change the resolution in a config file if you have a widescreen monitor. Go to this page to learn how: http://www.wsgf.org/dr/doom-3

wow thanks for the info! and thanks to everyone else who recommended the original.

i will be playing the original when i do play it. most of the research i did when trying to make a choice pointed to it and now you guys have convinced me. going the extra mile to set it up is no biggie.

for the record, i only got one response on the BFG side and they didn't have much to say lol.

Original is the right choice for mods.
You will only miss two things: 3D Vision (which is not good on this game anyway) and High Definition titles (it remains crappy on the main title screen but the HUD is ok)
