Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007)

iw3mp.exe has stopped working
I try to load up a multiplayer game but it just pops up with this and crashes the game. I'm currently using Windows 7 if that helps

Well couple other things. Turn off the steam overlay. Or close steam and try to open the game from the folder.

My steam version won't let me open directly from steam. I have to go to the folder and open. Not sure if I do it with steam on or not.

Windows Control Panel
Sound

Right click in empty space and select "Show Disabled Devices". Once Stereo Mix shows on the list then right click it and select "enable". If Stereo Mix didn't appear then you might need to buy a sound card or try updating your sound driver. You should have Stereo Mix. It's been a feature for a long time.

a few things to try. most common fixes first.

plug in a mic and headset

enable stereo mix

disable steam overlay as well as other overlays you may be using with other programs like xfire.

go to your steam game folder were the game folder is located. or most its probably c drive. click on start, then computer, c drive, program files (x86), steam library, steam apps, common, cod4, miles, and then change the name of the mssmp3.asi folder to mssmp3.bak you are just changing the asi to bak.

you can also try to not have steam running and go to the cod folder and and click on the iw3mp and try to launch from there.

also can try to just delete the pb folder itself and go without that as well. pb is not supporting the game anymore. so you either have to manually downgrade pb to the last version that supported cod 4 so you can play in all of the servers. or just dont worry about playing in servers that use pb.

and if you get to main menu and then get a crash trying to join servers you can also delete profile and create a new profile.

i have windows 7 and just downloaded the steam version as i have always had the cd version. all of the first part did not work for me. the changing the folder from asi to bak is what worked. but that is not to say that the other things did not. just at the time they did not. i may have started with the changing folder and still nothing and would have had to do the other things as well.

my pb folder i just replaced with my cd version one that i had.

The problem here is not having a mic plugged in (like the others said). However if you don't have a mic there are several ways to still be able to play, but I only recommend one.
Install Cod4X[iceops.in] (link removed by moderator... Search for Cod4X on Google), it actually fixes the problem instead of just working around it.

Problem is most don't just randomly instal a file. Why we suggest a work around.

They should read the description of that "random file". Seriously, it's the future of Cod4... It does so many good things already, and it's going to do so much more good things.
