X-COM: UFO Defense

OPENXCOM IMPROVED AI IS A ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ NIGHTMARE
Ok so with the normal xcom the ai used to have the alien units out in the open sometimes, and if encountered they would use the hell out of their time units to shoot all your soldiers and then still remain out in the open.

In OpenXcom if you enable the option of "sneaky AI" in the options before starting a new game the ai NO LONGER, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, will spawn out in the open. They will ALWAYS be indoor or in some type of cover. This I can endure. But they also SAVE their time units now, which is what is making the game now so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ difficult for me this time. Example: they encounter my soldiers, instead of firing all they can until they massacre my soldiers or miss the shots, they fire ONCE, and then use the remaining time units to HIDE behind the closest cover they have, AND most of the time they still have enough TU for ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ REACTION SHOTS if I go head on behind their cover to finish them off.

I am having huge amounts of casualties this time, and I hate to exploit the save and reload feature. I play on superhuman and I love difficult games, but this "sneaky ai" feature in OpenXcom is making me start to save and reload often so I don't loose the game...

Am I the only one who noticed this increase in difficulty with the OpenXcom patch????

One method may be to pack more explosives to destroy cover just a thought.
i noticed it even without sneaky AI on.. makes early game terror missions a nightmare when you just get spawntrapped by cyberdisks because you cant get out
Isn't it awesome?!

Like Wolfy said though, explosives become your best friend ever.

Also I've discovered that even moreso than before reactions is the single most important stat. Especially if you are playing with the rules that allow for accuracy to degrade over distance the sniper/spotter strategy becomes a lot more difficult.

havent made any... just wrapped my head around a heavy plasma and had to abort a mission because i didnt know oyu had to research clip first ¬_¬ put 50 scientists onto clip and skipped like three days because of it
sirlergan:
1) use high explosives, and human grenades. You can purchase both from the start.
2) Don't overlook laser weapons either. Laser rifles are the default gun for my non specialist soldiers though most of the game. They don't require ammo, though this is actually less of an issue in open X-Com since you can disable the 80 item limit, they do reasonable damage against most enemies, they fire fast, and are fairly accurate.

Sorry but I'm not that much of a masochist, I didn't enable the accuracy degradation option in my game. It's already damn hard without it...specially if you don't want to save and reload if things go wrong. I try not to unless I know loosing a battle (like an alien attack on my base) will make me loose the game.

I'll think about enabling that option after I beat my current game though...but I can already see it's going to be a nightmare...

PD: are aliens affected by the accuracy degradation if I enable the option? or does it only works on the player? if it's only on the player but aliens still have their normal accuracy then I don't thik I will enable it..sounds kinda unfair.

seemingly my troops never react... aliens seem to stay in cover and not move even without sneaky AI because once on a mission i had a building with 3 floaters on each side (terror mission) and i could not get out of my ship it was just stupid i had personal armor and heavy plasma, they were just oneshotting my guys as they walked out so i loaded my save and got out of there because they were just op and not letting me out nomatter what because they have like 9001% reaction skill

Don't send the starter interceptors after large ships, especially battleships. They WILL get one-shotted. You gotta at least send Firestorms and even then you need to gang up on them. I usually triple-team battleships with Firestorms using Plasma Beams and often can get away with just one of them damaged - but that's on a more middling difficulty.

You CAN take on battleships by ganging up with interceptors and avalanche missiles but expect HEAVY losses. Firestorms are fast but don't have a global flight range, so you need to have a lot of bases set up to coordinate. Taking down battleships is generally strictly a late-game thing to do unless you can actually catch them on the ground with a full skyranger.

I wait till they land and then do a recovery mission. More difficult but much more elerium to be had which gets in short supply later in the game.
