if yes you can probably download the game.
there should be a linux version of dosbox...
you can download it for free.
you need the original version of xcom:ufo defence or the steamversion to install the mod.
it fix plenty problems with the game and allow easy acess to mods.
it also improve the options so you can change screenresolution and many more.
They just released version 1.0, I'm playing it, and so far it's great.. indeed none of the (*many*) bugs that plagued the original, a a LOT of (great) new interface/gameplay options.

@Zoinker: you can install Steam for Windows in Ubuntu via wine (it works great for 12.04), install XCom and extract the game files to OpenXCom. It's arguably better than playing the original via wine.
Refering to OpenXcom simply as a "reversed engineered binary" is a bit misleading, as it gives the (false) impression that it aims to accurately recreate the original rules, mechanics and interface. And it doesn't: known bugs were fixed, UI was enhanced, some game rules/mechanics were intentionally changed, etc.
Worth checking: http://ufopaedia.org/index.php?title=Differences_to_X-COM_%28OpenXcom%29
in other words reverse engineering original XCom is only part of OpenXcom's magic ;)

I am aware of the meaning. Yes, OpenXcom reverse-engineered the original X-COM, and then they built on top of it by fixing bugs, improving graphics and so on. So OpenXcom is not _only_ a reverse engineered binary.
That is an *amazing* hint, thanks!
Also, this new "Proton Wine" built in Steam, mentioned in that URL, seems a great option
