There are mods that give a whole new level of gaming to your experience. Check out the Steam workshop and nexusmods.com and look for environment immersion mods. Read their instructions before you install anything :)
Some favourites of mine are:
Frostfall

Become a Bard

Climates of Tamriel

Live Another Life

Tons of graphical improvements and a massive amount of armor/weapon/item additions. Many of these are also very very VERY well done...as if they were professionally made and best part is; all for free.
I would have stopped playing Skyrim long ago if not for mods...400 hours, over 90 mods, and counting. I <3 the mod makers out there; your hard work is much appreciated. ;)
p.s. oh and for needing DLCs; most mods are vanilla so no real need to buy the expansions but I suggest you should check them out since it adds more content and that is a good thing. I expect a sale in the future but still just getting dawnguard/dragon born for 40 bucks is not that much all in all; I got my value for them imo. Up to you!
Vijla for skyrim has a Dragonborn version that adds extra content if you play it with her.
