Graphics Driver Fails: Making Skyrim unplayable
Skyrim, when out in the open areas it seems, CONSTANTLY causes my graphics card drivers to fail.

Screen will freeze, flicker and eventually come back. This happens a few times, or sometimes not at all, until the screen freezes, everything goes black and the game crashes entirely. This also happens with fallout 3 and fallout new vegas (much more so with new vegas) and not at all with any other graphically intense 3D game (planetside 2 and League of Legends all work fine).

Ive updated graphics drivers, tried to boot game in other compatibility modes, tweaked audio settings and some other things all to no avail. Starting a new character/game I am able to get through the first main dungeon. But as soon as i get to the first dragon battle.....it becomes unplayable. Freezing, crashing....forever.

The rage in my body.....it builds. Havent been able to play any of the games that use this graphics engine.... pls, halp me.

Windows 7 64bit ultimate
intel i7920
12 gb ram
Geforce 285gtx 1gb ram

use an older driver , for something that old you might want to stay in the 2xx.xx range , i know the 320.xx drivers run too hot for me (460gtx) , the 314.21 works best for me

How old is your graphics card? From the looks of it your graphics ram needs to be higher. Mine is at 1.4 G and it runs Skyrim on medium settings. have you turned of anti-aliasing?

1gb and Its fairly old at this point. When Skyrim is working, even its just for a minute or two, the framerate is perfect. Newer, seemingly more demanding games, run excellent without crashing. No anti-aliasing.

I agree that is a rather old card. I had issues on my old GTX 460. The only thing other than a new card I can suggest is to try another driver, I see one in the comments above.

Yes, I had the same problem happened to my 2 GTX460. Degrading to 314 seems to fix it for me. Crap 320 drivers.

Drivers are probably the issue. Also try this: HiAlgo[skyrim.nexusmods.com]

try this driver
http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7-winvista-64bit-296.10-whql-driver.html

Thanks for the recommendation; tried it out but no dice. Instant crashing.

Also tried playing around with the shadow settings....thats a no-go too.

:(

it is an old card , maybe time to think about an upgrade , or try the 314.21 or .22 driver that works real well for me

Ive considered that before, mainly cause windows aero was causing lots of similar problems with League of Legends....then i turned aero off and havent had the problem since.

except for with games that use this bethesda engine. All other games i play work fine under heavy proccessing loads. Planetside 2, for example, has a much newer engine that taxes my system pretty good (30fps or less) ... but it has yet to crash or have a similar problem to skyrim/fallout games.

Upgrading is inevitable; but when skyrim runs at 60fps+ but randomly crashes CONSTANTLY, in addition to other games that use the same exact engine, im thinking its not the card.

well,if you modded the game thats what you need to look at next, did you change ugrids ? or really increase the draw distance? try updating directx

and the engine is quite different

Zero mods. Will update directx and play with draw distance.

might be a runtime error ,, could be a combo of new driver old runtime running old hardware ..might have to do a runtime update then do a complete uninstall of the old graphics driver and then clean the regisrty from the old driver entries then reinstall the new driver,, ..
or just try a differnt driver and cross your fingers..
