Putting poison on a weapon problem

I am trying to poison a weapon- a dagger to be exact. However when I click on the potion it says you must equip a weapon to poison it. Well, the dagger is equipped. Can anyone please help?

Yes, the game is aimed at right handers unfortunately, as evidenced by the fact that without mods you could not even wear a ring on your left hand.
Seems you will have to swap to right hand to poison it and then swap it back to left, if you normally block with your right.
