Stupid.....Stupid.....Stupid mistake.
I have overwritten the riding horse animation for Skyrim because, well,....it's just horrible, lol. I mean, come on, have you seen it. Well, ok, all of you have seen it. So, like a stupidly drunken person who had never modded anything in his life (that would be a description of me; only not, because I have modded before) I forgot to backup the original horse animation. I know what you're thinking; I know what you're saying. That's....Soooo....Stupid. I know, right! I totally agree!! If I were not me, I and I read this, I would post that it was...Stupid! But, I am me....and I'm saying it.....sooo I'm not sure what that means, lol. Anyway, this new animation takes the running horse animation, not the sprint mind you, and changes it to a trotting motion. Trotting. The horse trots everwhere....up mountains....across rivers...down hills...between huge tree trunk toating giants in my dreams. I want to sprint on my horse all the time now, but I can't; my horse tires...and then there's more trotting. I would rather have my galloping hippo back! I miss my hippo! Oh, wait, hippos don't gallop.....they sort of trot....quickly.... umh... ok....well...You get my point.....right? So, the point of all of this. Does anyone know how I can fix this...Without...reinstalling the whole game. I have opened the game disk and checked the files. No go; the files are there, but formatted in a way I can't access. I do have a portable hard drive on my desk I use as a backup. But there is no option to install..only reinstall...when I access the game disk. If I have to reinstall everything...that would just be depressing. So any ideas?

Lets see if we can get you your hippo back... (lol, btw)

This is where the horse running animations are stored:

Steam\SteamApps\common\skyrim\data\meshes\actors\horse\animations

The safest way to go about this would be to look at the files in the folder you downloaded and make sure you're deleting all of the files that came with the mod. (Unless you have installed any other horse animation mods that are working, you can probably just delete the folder listed above).

The correct animations are stored in the Skyrim - Animations.bsa, and the game will default to those once the new versions are gone from you Data folder.

The last piece of advice would be to use a mod manager of some sort in the future.
It will make this process much easier.

Hope that made sense and helps. Good luck.

Thanks for that. I really do miss my hippo!!! LOL. So, I am learning here. If I delete the animation files at the location you specified does that delete the mod or does it delete the horse animation for the whole game? If it just deletes the mod then it is very simple for my overcomplicated brain. Which makes it very difficult, lol!

Like I said, look in the folder you downloaded for safety's sake. but if all the mod did was alter the horse animations then that's the folder the mod added to and that you want to delete.

The "real" animations are stored in the BSA so you won't lose them (just don't mess with the BSA).

I was under the impression from your discription that you had downloaded loose files. If that's not the case, see below.

If you got the mod from Workshop, there will be a plugin and a BSA. you can remove the mod by unsubscribing, then go to your Launcher, go to Data Files, find the plugin for the mod and highlight it and hit Delete Selected in the Launcher window. That should take care of it.

Let me be more specific. I have taken a mod and overwritten the .hkx files in skyrim>data>meshes>actors>horse>animations. If my thinking is correct, I have deleted the original files and replaced them with the files from the mod. I will try removing the animations folder with the three .hkx files and see if the game reverts to the original animation.

Ok, wait one (which means hold on a second...please lol) while I test this.

You didn't replace the original files. They're still there, in the Animations bsa. Removing the animations folder will fix it (if that's all the mod came with - need to be sure of that).

I'll be going now. Hope you get it fixed.

Good luck. That's it for the forums for a while, I think.

Eureka!!! TX you're the man. Deleting the files worked perfectly. And I have learned something. We all win...yaaaay, lol. And I have my hippo back, lol. Lesson for the day, avoid hippos, they are deadly and suprisingly fast...with their quick....trotting. Have a great day.

Oh TX...too right. I do appreciate your due diligence, sir. My apologies, Stabby, thanks for the incite. It was very helpful and problem solving, lol.
