If you mod later on down the line, and have issues, it'll be REALLY handy to understand how the Vanilla game looked beforehand, and how it plays out...
So, while I say yeah, mod all you like, your game...at least try to understand the Vanilla game first, you'll be glad you did :)
You can get Quick and simple mods from the Steam workshop, once in the workshop, hit 'Skyrim' and you-re in!..REMEMBER..SOME MODS REQUIRE CERTAIN DLC INSTALLED IN ORDER TO WORK.
Once you have gotten more familiar with Steam and had plenty of talky talky with friends, you will learn about Nexus mods. BUT...This requires a little more computer knowledge, You will be advised to download the Nexus Mod Manager. This will help you download and manage your mods MORE EFFICIENTLY...
I will leave you with this...If someone painted a lovely painting for you... would you want it all changed and enhanced, altered, before you even saw it?...All the best :)
Muahahahaha
Do you not want cool Armour, or funky weapons? Most are Lore Friendly, so what's wrong with them?
Also, there are House / Castle Mods, Quest mods, not just only Environment mods...
Because the vast majority of them are basically cheats. You're lucky if a modded weapon/armor only gives you endgame item tier levels of power from the start of the game. :)
NMM[skyrim.nexusmods.com] (Nexus Mod Manager) is a good tool to control your mods and load order. Just download mods from Nexus[skyrim.nexusmods.com] and hit the green Download With Manager link.
BOSS[skyrim.nexusmods.com] is a great tool to sort your load order when you have 20+ mods because the load order is the biggest cause to CTD.
Now for mods that I recommend even when you start playing for the first time.
High Resolution Texture Pack (Free DLC)
Unofficial Skyrim Patch[skyrim.nexusmods.com]
Unofficial High Resolution Patch[skyrim.nexusmods.com]
Unofficial Dawnguard Patch[skyrim.nexusmods.com] If you have Dawnguard DLC
Unofficial Hearthfire Patch[skyrim.nexusmods.com] If you have Hearthfire DLC
Unofficial Dragonborn Patch[skyrim.nexusmods.com] If you have Dragonborn DLC
I'm afraid I have to concede and agree to that sir!...lol
BUT. Once you get to hear about some individuals, and what they make, you can talk to the Nexus community and Steam, to get the word on who makes what and usually it just takes a certain amount of time to get through all the crap,
If you want to mod the game, I suppose it's worth taking the time to do it properly. This isn't a plug in and play sort of thing. Bethesda have made the game as such, but the modding side to it is a whole kettle of fish all together, and you must be patient, and get talking to the modders, if you can, or friends who know where3 good places to go are..Don't worry, It's all good :)
I would recommend getting the unofficial patches first and foremost. There is one for Skyrim and one for each DLC.
I would also recommend ditching the Bethesda High Resolution Texture pack and getting Skryim HD texture pack instead.
Project Reality : Climates of Tamriel is awesome.
Realistic Lighting Overhaul is awesome.
SkyUI is awesome (Requires SKSE) <Skyrim Script Extender>
Immersive Armors
Immersive Weapons
Bandoliers : Bags and Pouches
Cloaks of Skyrim
The list never ends. All kinds of great stuff out there.
ENBs...
