As nightcore says the rock is a little brighter the the rest and there is a clay pit as well

Just outside of Whitrun as you leave continue around the to the left of the wall (around and past the stables)and along the rockky terrain you will come across some Quarried stone to mine.

All the Hearthfire houses have the quarried stone wall near where you are going to build the house. Just look for the brighter area in the rock faces.

Too bad they don't have a log splitter like at the mill so you can get your sawn logs as needed.

CK hates me when I just try to figure it out. The preview pane went to a box 1inch by 5 inch when I tried to enlarge it the first time. and when I strecth it out it snaps back to 1x5 again. I even uninstall Ck and reinstalled. Still does same thing.
My corners won't snap in place trying to do the first tutorial, but the first two wall pieces pop right together, so the snap-to is on. Then It CTD's when trying to align them by hand, lol.

I tried Minecraft but java is a dbag and messed up. There are also these annoying glithes in skyrim that need to be fixed, such as the glitch in Dragonborn where Miraak screws up and doesn't come back to life. Just kill the dragons, though.
