How do you handle loot?
I know this is a matter of preference but I would like to know how others handle loot. I have always tried to carry off everything I can including clutter, but now I'm planning to play as much as possible a lonely character without porters in tow (a.k.a. followers) and I have to watch my weight :~P Also I would like to set out on "tours" where I explore at least three complete dungeons before having to go back to the store. I think carrying stuff with a weight/value rate of 10 or more would be sensible, or am I still being too greedy?

(I remember in Fallout New Vegas where I picked EVERYTHING, every last item, I cleared the whole region of old cans and empty bottles!!)

i use a 1:10 rule which works pretty good. its going to depend on the dungeons you go through though because enchanted weapons or armor are a lot heavier than magic robes =P And dont even bother picking up trash lol
My personal preference is only carrying loot that is worth 10x the weight. Which generally works from the start of the game as most armours are say 5 weight, 50 gold. I can go a couple of dungeons depending on what I find and what I am wearing. Any higher than 10x threshhold will leave you not picking most things up at low level. :3
My guidelines for handling loot are pretty simple, I don't like to carry much of anything when I am out adventuring, I play a rogue-like character more often so if I am running low on some coin, I can brew up lots of potions and sell them off and stupidly high prices for completely garbage potions. So the rest of my collecting and loot handling works with a simple logic as follows.

Better than what I am wearing? Pickup, Replace and Drop Old
High-Value and Light-Weight? Pickup
Gem? Pickup
Potion? Pickup
Gold or Lockpick? Pickup
Unique Item? MUST KEEP AT ALL COSTS

I must say, sometimes it feels like there are too many unique but worthless unique items in the game... Just put a fancy name on a garbage sword.

I think some of them are levelled so if you grab them early on they get old pretty quick. :/

Yeah, I know they are leveled, I am quite familiar with the entire Skyrim system. ;) I just find its rather dull that they did that, it just makes you feel bad when you throw away your Axe of Whiterun and Sword of Riften... :(
I can understand the need to not make it overpowered early. Particularly the more easily obtainable ones. But items such as Chillrend and the Nightingale items take a fair bit of playing to be earned, just get items that you'd only wear at endgame for the aesthetics. But it would be nice if they levelled with you or could be upgraded.

Mmm Chillrend. <3 Was my favourite sword back in Oblivion.
Sadly they are only leveled up to the point that you aquire them, with few being static. That didn't take long to get off topic, haha. Personal favorites is without question the Ebony Mail and Marunes Razor; And yes Chillrend is one of my favorite Oblivion bring backs, that sword sure gets around.
I take items of value never clutter like spoons and burned books, weapons, raw materials, and rare items, uless i am at higher levels where i will ignore low level weapons and enchanted items

its been like that since oblivion though shoulda known going in
I only take Arrows and Gold other then that i dont care about it. Unless they have a good bow i would take it...
i only take things worth at least 30 gold and anything better than what i have currently.
I've always run on a ratio of 5, personally, though I -do- have to make a city stop after every excursion, so I'm starting to raise that number.
I leave behind a lot of loot regardless of any ratio. Usually I only grab stuff if it seems valuable, so maybe 500 gold or higher. It really depends. Efficiecy really doesn't matter to me and I have enough gold to not have to care about getting as much as possible.
I usually pick up all weapons and armor that i can and take the safest route back to my home as fighting while overencumbered is difficult but if it is a dragon forget it i'll drop back down to the limit so i can move easier and not get burnt to a crisp lol, but in honesty i go for stuff i need, i have like 11 homes including all the vanilla homes/hearthfire homes and 3 home mods and i try to have one specific armor/weapon set that is at each home that way i never have to be like "damn where is my steelplate armor, oh it must be at one of my other homes" so as you can imagine i have a lot to get :P

Its not worth it picking up all the clutter, in all the time you spend with clutter stuff (bowls, burnt books, food items, etc)... you could spend instead exploring new areas and finding more really good stuff (or spend levelling skills), etc. The main exception I make to what people have listed is of course the dwarven (dwemer) scrap metal items. I am into smithing and I will grab even the Solid Dwemer Metal (item) which weighs 25 and has a "value" of 25, but smelts into 5 Dwarven Metal Ingots which are as valuable as gold if you are trained up in smithing and wearing smithing gear (make a warhammer, and then improve it).
I hate getting all of them cause once they are gone, they are gone, they should have a mod that sets the dwarven ruins to respwn the scrap metal after like 3-5 in game days!
