...the college of winterhold. All the mages and apprentices used their spells on it. I didnt have to do anything, really.

Needless to say, it was minced meat within 15 secs on Master difficulty.

Hey, this happened to me too. The mages just went crazy with the spells and my follower at the time was the only one that came into the party with a sword. As for me, I just stood there and enjoyed the show and absorbed a little soul afterward.

I had that happen twice, and both times it died on the roof, where I couldn't figure out how to get at it (no dragonriding yet).

It's not really a bug, it's just that it is annoying to have them spawn there each time you use the fast travel. However that was before an update which reduced/deleted this spawnfest near the college. (the more you use the fast travel, the more dragons will spawn... and since winterhold is far far away from major cities...^^)
I'm not sure if they still spawn there because last time I played and went there, I haven't seen a single dragon and was surprised because I was always prepared to fight one after getting there by fast travel.

I've had loads of dragons land in the college courtyard, at one time almost eveytime I went there a dragon would appear.

Got no help from anyone though and ancient dragons are tough. Even if I stood behind a pillar the dragon would somehow reach through/around and chomp on my bones....

in the end I gave up the unequal struggle and took off to Winterhold and let the guards deal with it, more room to manouver too, no more trouble then.

You can get up to the roof to get the soul by going up through the library or one of the other towers. They all join and you can walk round to where the dragon is.
