Are Modders who sell Mods still Modders?
I wouldnt think so, i would call them underpayed third-party-developers. the title "Modder" is an honourable Award given to proud people, who do this in their free time for the game they love, the fun of it and the community. They sure deserve reward, but not every kind of reward has to be money. its like volunteer, altruistic work, they are great people, but paying them is out of question and would destroy the whole thought behind it (unless its a donation, which is also altruistic motivated by the donator)

Sellouts ?

Yes, because they are modifying the game.

And drop the sanctimonious fascade. Modders are not some group of saints. Yeah, they typically make the games we play better - but that doesn't make them honorable or proud, ffs.

But really, if you like modders so much, then why stop them from making a buck or two off of their hard work? Simply because you want to continue to benefit from their efforts with no cost to yourself? Well, to that I say, screw you.

Most modders in this system will make nothing whatsoever. Modders may "earn" $2 under the paltry 25% split, where Zenimax and Valve get 75% without producing any content, but they do not actually get any money until they reach a cut of $100 (and if they never reach $100, then Zenimax/Valve will just hold onto the money for ya).

Not to mention the anti-consumer practice of allowing only a 24 hour refund, and banning people from the marketplace for a week for doing so.

Edit: In fact, if I wanted to donate straight to a modder, I don't have the ability to do so. If I wanted to give a modder $10 for their mod, then I would have to give them $40, which they would potentially never see because as I said they are paid in increments of $100, so that's a way that this system directly hurts modding community, not to mention the workshop being inundated with microtransaction-esque crap.

yeah but no we're really just entitled

I think you're right. They're not modders anymore.

This. it's an unofficial 3rd party dlc where no one can be persecuted by law (ecept maybe Valve in EU) for making broken or abandoned content.

Third party DLC contractors.

On top of that, Steam/Valve thinks it's the community's job to police stolen mods (according to Gabe on reddit). So where's our cut?

Look, they're still modders. That's what they do. However I do think 3rd Party DLC is a better description for the products they create.

Consumer Rights Associations should take a look on what is happening here.
Holydub Apr 27, 2015 @ 2:20pm
I believe real modders have a real job and just mod games for the love of the game.

Exact, just idiots (not because they sell mods, but they earn next to nothing while the two other sides get a fat nice cut). Fits perfectly.

Speaking as a modder, I consider the word modder to mean "Unpaid Amateur Developer", and yes I proud not to be a PRO because I have seen some of the crap the pros release and my standards are higher than many of theirs.

So lets call them Pro's... you can expand that to lady of the night if you like but I am refering to the fact they make money from this with all that entitles. We have all seen the pros release broken and unfinished games time and time again, we know what the word PRO means.

Skyrim V1 anybody :)

Remember, we modders are not in a rush to release unfinished work, we have a different work effic. That makes the difference.
