Wards are your shield for starters.

i meant using a real shield it does work out pretty good actually

but duel cast any good?

I don't have it yet. I just read that it creates a more powerful effect. Personally I like dual conjuring. If you have a follower it creates THREE distractions! muahaha

Depends on school of magic.
-It is essential in Destruction.
-Very important for Illusion - essential, if you plan to use whole variety of spells.
-Quite useless at early stages of Restoration and Alteration, but very good later on.
-It almost pointless in Conjuration, because you are likely to recast the spell long before it would run out, and if it doesn't, then there is no reason to cast it again.

Dual cast is more of an option to have in case you need the extra damage. Most time the correct spell and the skill of it will allow you to destroy your enemy. And an actual shield is a good idea, as it may in fact be your only armor until your enchanting skill is high enough.

One of the shield perks, as I'm sure your aware is at perk level 50 with block - the ability to cut in half, the damage received from Ice/Fire/Lightning when blocking with your shield.

A mage with a shield seems like a strange concept normally most people play more like a spell sword ! Where you wield a sword and add spells into the mix! Whether that's paralyze, frost fire or shock ! Whatever school you favour you need to cast it a lot to get the skills up so that you can be powerful ....in the beginning your spells aren't very powerful and casting destructions spells only counts if you hit valid targets so use small spells and hit targets as often as you can! That also needs having as much magicka as you can. So many things to work on!

Stealh combat works with mage as well. If you get silent casting and don't have a huge Flame billowing continuously from your left hand you can still sneak backstab then fry enemies!

Fireball, huh? Dual casting that spell should give you plenty of what you are looking for.

Eh, I find dual casting boring, especially in destruction. Stun-locking an opponent gets old after a while. I never bothered. I always went either the shield + spell or ward + spell route. Don't know about the other schools.

I found that the Skyrim lacks a number of useful control and support spells that were present to a degree in earlier titles. While it lacked the depth and complexity of the D&D system, the older titles at least did have a useful assortment of charm effect spells.
