Only problem with LOOT was is compatibility with existing mods, but they seem to work just fine with it. Even SkyProc patch accepted loot.exe as BOSS.
LOOT works almost exactly like BOSS. It just looks a bit weird at first.
- Click it
- Select "Sort Plugins"
- LOOT looks up the new masterlist and checks trough your mods
- LOOT displays the order it is setting your mods, in case you are aware that masterlist does not regonize something and you need to see that things are in order.
- Hit "Apply"
- LOOT displays report, with 2 pages: Summary and Details.
- Go trough report, if you need to and do what you have to do - like clean files with TES5Edit - as with BOSS.
- Close LOOT. Done.
Seems like reason to upgrade then (still have BOSS)
This is new to me.
However, I uninstalled BOSS before moving to LOOT. Could this be your problem?
Giantdad how do you work out how to build your load order properly? (ie your method)
Yes you are missing something, because A LOT modauthors don't say what the load order should be and given the number of mods out there. Another thing is some mods need to be loaded before other mods and it is sometimes not clear what the load order should be to get a good result. Also it is maybe simple if you run 5 or 10 mod however if like me you run over 150 mods ... well you get the picture.
I'll retry to re-install loot I like the interface better.
Well, my load order is currently 126 mods deep. Keeping up with changes between their relations manully is usually more trouble than worth.
It is also obvious, that modders can't be aware of each and every effect their mods might have with other mods. Users can send reports as well.
This became clear to me today. LOOT was already aware of mod's relation to other mod I installed, I had not ran it before launching the game, because I was only testing and mod's download page did not inform me about a conflict with these mods. They didn't knew about it.
Seeing how many mods there are, it would really be impossible that modders even could know all about it. This is why LOOT is important tool for most of us.
Basically, if a mod strictly says to be loaded after other mods, or simply by logic it's obvious that you want one mod to overwrite another, then you place them accordingly. If a mod says that it NEEDS to be loaded first or last or in a specific way, I place them as told. Otherwise, I load the largest/most important mods first, and the smaller ones afterwards. I've never had an issue that wasn't my fault.
EDIT : Yeah I guess it makes sense. For me it takes just a few seconds to set up by myself, but I only use ~30 mods in my game, although they are mostly mods that affect the game in big ways. I prefer using fewer, bigger mods than a huge amount of tiny mods changing very small, specific things. If I had hundreds of mods I would look into using BOSS or LOOT.
Out of curiosity, how do you guys get around to installing mods while already on a save? Usually uninstalling a mod or adding new ones just forces me to start a new playthrough.
