Skyrim Hearthfire isn't exactly The Sims level
As you can see from the simplistic AI, lots of bugs and lack of options.

The only things you can do with a spouse is:

1) Asking for money.
2) Asking for food.
3) Asking how the kids are.
4) Move.
5) Leave rest for the imagination.

And apparently, according to the spouse Dragonborn just always came back from an adventure even when he/she was away only for half an hour in game time. Funny thing how you can give gifts to children and get a reaction, but not to the spouse.

Both of my main characters have a spouse, but each time I visit their families, I actually start to miss The Sims instead if I want to play house. I don't know about you...

Getting married isn't actually a Hearthfire feature, though. Marriage in Skyrim is indeed pretty meh, although it's better if you marry a follower so you can go off adventuring together.

I still think it's pretty awesome :)

If you're mod savy, go over to Lover's Lab and get the sexlab framework plus enhanced spouse mod. I also recommend Interesting NPCs mod from Nexus to get more marriage candidates who actually have more than 8 lines of dialogue.

I don't actually bother for mods when I already know/have games and metaverses to sate that craving.
