Blood On The Ice : Empty Altar Room

I went through the usual steps.... I got the point where I told Viola about finding her pamphlets in Hjerim and she wants to go with me to investigate. We went to the wardrobe and it was empty. I've played this quest through before and never had any problems. I have no idea what went wrong. Has anyone else run into this?

You must not have read the two journals. Once you read them an option will be available when speaking to Viola about the butcher, but you also have to have a pamhlet in your inventory.

You can also avoid investigating with Viola if you have both the journals in your inventory when you speak to her.

As far as you know, did you do anything in the quest this time that you haven't done on previous occasions?

This quest should be named "Bug on the Ice". It's so riddled with bugs, I always use the wiki and progress step by step until it's finished.

I found the first journal, the pamphlets and the amulet. But the problem is, the second journal isn't in that secret room. It's completely empty.

I don't think I did anything diffrent from the first few time's I've played through skyrim. I even followed a walk through just to double check. Very odd. "Bug on the Ice" is a good name for it.

I am also having this glitch. I have done nothing differently than on other saves. I tried to look in the cupboard before going to Viola, but it was indeed empty. No altar, bookshelves were empty. I cannot progress in this quest because the second butcher journal is simply unavailable as a result. This is the only place I've seen someone reporting the same bug. Could it be a mod issue?

It's possible it was a mod. But I"m not sure. I ended up going back to an earlier save, before I got to Windhelm and it worked.
