[GUIDE] How to kill a Frost Troll
YES, THIS WHOLE CHUNK OF TEXT IS ALL ABOUT KILLING A FREAKIN FROST TROLL. DEAL WITH IT!

Hello! In this thread I will teach you how to deal with the Frost Troll, and any kind of Troll for that matter. It works well on every difficulty setting and can be used effectively by pretty much every character, no matter the playstyle. It can also be used to fight pretty much any slow meele figher type enemy in Skyrim, including Draugrs, Bandits, and so on.

Here's a video (made by me) presenting what to do:
https://youtu.be/I7kwfP30IVk
(Music used: Iron Maiden - Hallowed Be Thy Name)

What am I doing and why:
As you can see, before the fight I unequipped my armor. It might seem stupid, as Frost Troll deals a lot of damage, and if you wear Light Armor, Robes, or use a perk or a Standing Stone that negates slowdown caused by armor, then you're right. However I do no have anything like that, and I unequipped my Heavy Armor in order to move faster and better dodge attacks. After all, it's better to take no damage instead of taking reduced damage, am I right?

Next, you see me equip Flames spell in both hands. it can be done with spell in only one hand, it'll just take more time. However, Trolls, Draugrs, Bandits, and so forth, often do these little taunts (Draugr bashing his shield, Bandit waggling his hands like a chimp), animations during which you can walk over to them and they won't attack, and in these moments you can walk over and quickly do a lot of damage with your meele weapon, however it's much more risky, so I don't recommend doing that.

Finally, I attack the Frost Troll, using the spell in a pulsating manner (fire, stop, fire, stop, fire, stop). That's because, as you know, fire spells inflick additional afterburn damage, and it can be used to increase spell's effectiveness two or even three times. And Flames spell is available to everyone at the beginning, so it's an excellent little trick to use if you're playing a mage character, or anyone using Destruction magic.

EDIT:
1. My character is level 7 at the time of writing this post, and the video was created about 30 minutes ago.
2. Now, after fighting the Frost Troll twice (once for real, and once recording), then spending solid 25 minutes on rendering and uploading the video, and writing this thread, i can finally proceen on my way to High Hrothgar

Nice.

Some playthroughs that troll is no trouble, and others, he is a killing machine.

I bring Lydia along. As soon as Lydia engages combat, I start shooting arrows. When Lydia goes to 1 knee, and he focusses on me, I run back down the trail toward Karita.

I let Karita engage combat While I still shoot arrows. When she goes down, I run back up the trail to meet Lydia running down now.

Lydia engages and I finish off troll with arrows.

That is how I do it at level 1-2.

I used to fight the troll all the time, but I accidentally discovered a way to run around that area. Make sure the troll is in his usual position above that recess in the rocks. Then before you enter the cul-de-death, dodge left around the rocks and head downslope and skirt the whole place.

The troll did not see me until I had run past hime. He may give chase, but if you are as fast as he is, he will stop chasing after awhile. You might have to skip one emblem.

Not sure what happens if the troll is out hunting.

It would be viable if not for Trolls huge regeneration rate. If you stop damaging them for a while they will regenerate health, and it will make the fight A LOT longer

Sternrake, the Troll is never out hunting, he's always on that rock above the road. There are no special routs to take, you can just sprint past him on the road, he's too slow to catch up with you. Buf if you want to level up some skills or get some Troll Fat then my guide is the way to go

I do save that troll to later, at lvl 30 atleast. Why go there when you dont need until you actually need.
But the best thing to take down frost troll is fire more fire and fire.
Lydia is good to.

If you need the troll fat or xp, by all means stop and kill this thing.

Level 23 Dark Elf making this drive-by. Same character at about level 7 with Jenassa made the first run. I have Lydia now, but I left her in Whiterun for this. She is in heavy armor and loves to attack anything that moves. This is the second straight time I have made it around the troll without drawing its attention.

Using Aura Whisper shout to see where the troll was hiding. Looks like it sometimes moves back off the front of that ledge -- but not for long.

I have the entire climb starting at the bridge in Iverstead and ending at the door to High Hrothgar Abbey. Leave comments if anyone wants to see it.

Or you don't quote a huge chunk of text if you're going to write 5 words. I hate people like you so much, especially since your reply didn't need quoting anyway

I don't like followers in general, I use them only when I know I'm gonna get my ass beaten, like when fighting Forsworn or Dragon Priests.
Trolls deal A LOT of damage, and Lydia would just stand there and take it all. Followers tend to just stand in place and block instead of attacking, so Lydia would fall on her knee very quickly. In my opinion that's not worth the hassle
