Conversation Issues

So I'm playing Skyrim, and I have some issues with conversation. Normally, when I hear someone talking, I hear normal volume. However, whenever I talk with someone, the voice comes as very faint, almost inaudible, and there is a faint echo effect. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Can you hear the voice clearly if you move your mouse from side to side? If so, it's possible that your sound card has been reset to surround mode. That happened to me once.
