choppy play

Hello, for the most part the game runs okay, but when I need to do anything more involved than simply hitting the ball around, the game gets slow (I'd say it freezes for a couple seconds to a minute or so to be honest). Examples of situations that make my game get choppy: When I try to aim cannons, spinning the ball, switching between game options at the main screen, changing worm features such as clubs, voices, hats...
I run windows 7 and made sure my video drivers were up to date. I exceed all the system requirements for the game. I have vertical sync enabled. Any ideas on why just certain in-game functions would make my game choppy? (I made sure to verify the integrity of the cache through steam)

Turnning the Vsync off helped me but i still have load times that feel longer than they need to be.

For me it was sound settings. I had been playing with my mixer before the weekend and apparently dolby 5.1 was messing it up.
