Aside from that, yes OpenGL at it's current level (and beyond) would be better overall.
On the other hand, MS suck :) and linux should replace windows.
directx is the standard so we must deal with it
Games lose support after so many years just like most things in life have an expiration date. You really can't expect the devs to update the games engine when they would lose out on both time AND money. If anything capcom would need to market and sell all 3 games as a remaster to break even.
Also, if you really wanted to play the game it shouldn't be too hard to muster up 250$ to build a Windows PC. Or are you one of those fanboys that can't be bothered to use multiple platforms? Not trying to sound harsh, but you have to look at both ends of the spectrum IE buisness side of things & consumer retention.
I love this series just as much as anyone else if not more. So if capcom is listening get on that money train as this is one series that deserves reboot. Focus on co-op, wide open destructable environments, and giant boss battles with multiple objectives. They tried to westernize LP3 with a focus on story/human emotion and it really didn't feel like the Lost Planet that we know and love. Keep the focus on environments/levels and less on characters. /Rant.
