Would be great if there were more similar games; sins of a solar empire is very similar in combat but less tactical ship battles and more RTS - read:'Zerg' battles, same with Gemini wars, which i think is slightly more tactical but i've not played enough of that to confirm... All pale in comparison to this however...
Funny thing is, the game was supposed to be "imperium galactica 3" a 4X game, you can see where they dropped the idea in places, like the starmap you see before the missions start, you can move around it like the galaxy map of a 4x and the missions were supposed to just be the space battles... but even with the change in direction, it turned out to be an awesome game and as you rightly pointed out, was way ahead of its time in almost every way imagineable..
And when you consider the kind of crap that gets sequels and more nowadays, it shows just how stale the gaming industry has become!
Actually, you can see some early promo vids for Nexus: TJI when it was still being developed as Imperium Galactica 3. Here are some relevant links, such an early promo video showing many ship models seen in the final release of Nexus (realistically-placed maneuvering thrusters included):

And a playable demo of IG3:

I'm very glad that the Nexus 1 devs changed the GUI before releasing Nexus. The devs even parodied their own early work in the credits of Nexus 1--you'll see several references to their playable demo in the credits movie. Still, I would have like to have seen some 4X elements make it into Nexus, such as redeploying forces on a strategic scale or choosing where to take your next mission.
The funny thing is, the original developers of the Imperium Galactica series, which was the studio Digital Reality, was perfectly capable of developing IG3 but for whatever reason wasn't asked to. They went out and make the short-lived Haegemonia: Legions of Iron space-based 4X series instead, which I believe deserves more entries. Take a look at what they managed to achieve with graphical tech from 2002:

Sadly no equivalent game in the space-based fleet command genre I know of has explosions (that tear ships apart into drifting hulks) like that game did, or even the very nice "weapons interact with shields in unique and nice-looking ways" graphics. Nexus 1 doesn't have ships (not stations) that visibly lose parts as they are destroyed or hulked, and its weapon impact effects or sound effects don't noticeably change if they hit shields or hulls, or miss entirely.
A new Imperium Galactica game may be in the wings, though:

This is a very sad fact of the gaming industry.
Nexus, Imperium Galactica, and Haegemonia all deserve to be revived as series, frankly. But try convincing COD gamers that they should stop trying to quickscope and try to learn something that requires more patience and forethought, not to mention frustration tolerance.
Nexus is truely where its at, there needs to be more games like Nexus.
