Help with controllers....(pc with xbox gamepads)

Just bought his today....loving the look of it but....

I've got two xbox controllers in...and it only recognises the -first- gamepad when both players (in coop) are set to "gamepad" and then it defaults to giving the second player that controller. (The -second- controller does not work at any point). When I open the controls to customise them, the first players gamepad is set to a load of numbers and the second players gamepad is set to the first gamepads buttons.

I have a ton of 2-player games and I'm baffled as to why this isnt working...I know the controllers definitely work fine-theres nothing wrong with them. Is there a config file or something I can edit? I have spent quite a while trying to get this working but it simply isnt having it. Even joy2key is no help (too jerky)

I have never seen this before, dont understand why there should be a problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated

heres a screenshot for gamepad one....plugging in onits own or with gamepad two. Cant customise controls. Just a bunch of random numbers as opposed to xbox controls.

gamepad two suddenly has all the controls that player 1 should have. But theres no way to (a) get players 2's controls over to player 1 or (b) get both players displaying gampads.
