Running backwards when using grapple

Grapple doesn't seem to work reliably for me, making it hard to pick items up and hard to actually grapple.

When standing still and pressing grapple, the character runs to the left.

When trying to pick up a bottle, 80% of the time the character runs to the left.

When trying to pick up a heavy gun, 80% of the time the character runs to the left.

I'm using a PS4 controller over bluetooth and running Windows 10. This controller works fine in plenty of other games.

Can anyone help?

No, sorry. I just gave up on the game :(

Though it might be a little late for the tip, what I found out helped is to press down before you press the grapple button.
