The Dig

Has anyone NOT used hints, or cheats or anything to beat this?
I just want to know if anyone has played through the game solely on their own reasoning and problem solving abilities. How about you? Did you use help?

I had to look at a walkthrough 1 time, other than that on my own :) not an easy task :P

I play these games by a rule that if I get stuck for more than 5-10 minutes I look for help. That's how I keep them enjoyable.

Agreement with edo, trying to complete a Lucasarts adventure without looking at a walkthrough regularly is like headbutting a frozen sausage to kill yourself. May be possible but it'd take a while.
Its too anti-intuitive at places. For example, the turtle skeleton, holding down the button to get the light bridges to work, the fact that you had to use the red rod on the map room (I think you also use it on a door, right?). Those were the only things I had to look up though, I think.

Aye, and it's not even about being super smart or anything, sometimes I will get something right in 10 seconds and a friend later tells me he was stuck there for an hour and viceversa.

There is a randomness to figuring out these "logical" puzzles that I didn't mind as a kid but don't have the time to endure these days. :)

I had this game originally when it first came out YEARS ago, when walkthru's did not exist. I bought the game for the thrill of playing the unknown again (If you like this, check out the other LucasArts games --- Indiana Jones series are especially great!).

It seemed to lose its luster the second time around, especially forgetting to pick up one random piece of equipment and having to scour for over an hour just to find it.

But.... no help :)

I admire anybody who doesn't look at a walkthrough to finish this game.

I used a walkthrough the first time I played this game more then a decade ago. I was younger then and my problem solving skills were not as they are today. I'll be picking this up again and playing through it without a walkthrough. I've been doing this a lot lately and I find after shelving a game for a few years, I forget the story in between the beginning and the end. I also find that the puzzles are easier and that the solutions come to me. I find this enjoyable, if not for any reason other then nostaltia.

I remember back in its hay day my father played this through without aid. I recall sitting on a stool next to him guessing along. FYI, there is a book as well that was fairly written. Written by Alan Dean Foster.

I had to use a walkthrough years ago, but forgot nearly all of the game in the time since. This time, my friend and I went through our respective games simultaneously and helped each other. Of course, we still had to get two hints. First for getting the power going early on (the only hint we needed was to focus our attention on that room and we quickly figured it out - after having wandered around for HOURS before getting the hint), and then later on for getting into the crypt because somehow neither of us even once thought to pick up the item needed to depress the stone switch. Other than that? We did fine. We both got the space rat puzzle on our own, and worked through the turtle bones together. The hints were ultimately only necessary for the dumbest of reasons on our own parts.

I've played this game when I was 6 years old, in 1996. And I'm proud to say that my father and I beat the game without any help :D

I actually felt like the puzzles were more intuitive than other pretty random puzzles on other Lucas games, finished it fairly fast without a walkthrough.

I had this game right when it came out in '95, but my computer couldnt run it at the time and had to wait about 6 months to play it. I was in my early teens and played it through without any help, as my family didnt have the net then. Have loved playing through this game occasionally since then, still remember every puzzle by heart.

These games are from a time where no one had access to online references and guides to help them. To actually enjoy the puzzles you need to have a strong grasp of "adventure game logic" which no one would have unless they played these games in the early 90s.
