Linux Binaries
From FAQ:
A) I can't program, nor own a Linux/Mac machine to compile and test it on.
Unless a friendly programmer offers to do it for free, it's unlikely to happen.
If this game really doesn't run on the default episodic files (which come with OSX and Linux binaries with one of those SDKs) then I can offer you to compile and test the binaries on Linux. I'm using Ubuntu 16.04 64 bit but I would obiously try to compile them for 32 bit (no 64 bit source games afaik) and on an older Ubuntu version (12.04; if that fails then 14.04).

It appears you only have to copy some files from the "Source SDK Base 2013 Singleplayer" and then you can play it without problems (command to run is: ./hl2.sh -game downfall).

These are the files you need to add:
bin/* hl2_linux hl2.sh
I also recommend you to copy libgcrypt.so.11 from the steam-runtime to the bin folder so that the game can be played if the steam-runtime was disabled.

edit: here are the files -> http://www.moddb.com/games/half-life-2-episode-two/downloads/half-life-2-downfall-linux

Just in case you decide to release a Linux version, I can volunteer to test it! I'm not a software developer, but I have loads of experience with Linux and might be able to help solve some issues if you encounter some. Would be really great to play this on Linux.

Also you mentioned Chapter 2 might come with Linux support, if you need help, I also would love to help you out :humiliation:

Linux is free. HL2 for Linux can run on any standard i686 or later with an SM3 capable video card.

The compiler can run on a headless machine, and technically can run as a cross compiler in any GNU environment including Mingw32 for Windows, Fink (OS X) or even on a modified android phone or network router if you are crazy enough to try it, and willing to wait hours for the result.
