Realism or gameplay mechanics?
Hi,

Is the possibility to fuse an atom, or fission it into the smaller parts, based on something?
I mean: do the parts that it breaks into have other logic than "it's programmed that way".
Or is it just there for the prupose of gameplay mechanics?

I've recently started studying chemistry and bought this game just for the sake of remembering more of the atomic masses, but it would be nice to know if the mechanics relied on some actual facts or not.

The Fission is not based on realism since that would hurt the gameplay. I tried it with a more realistic approach but it didnt feel good when played.

The game tries to split atoms in half, if that does not match, it shifts mass from one of the 2 parts to the other until there is a match for the bigger mass, if there is a match, tha atom will be added to a list. This continues until there is no mass left. This is somewhat realistic-ish and fits the gameplay.

The atomic masses are also not perfect, since they are rounded to full numbers, again because of the gameplay. But it certainly helps to remember them anyway.

As a cemistry graduate (many years ago) I am having trouble trying to work out the rules you are employing for the fissions and fusions. Do you intemnd to publish an online guide or do we have to guess our way through it?.

Yes, a guide would certainly help!
At first I tought maybe elements with a difference in electronegativity larger than X would be able to be combined, but this has proven not to be the case.
After that I figured I'd just ask before making more presumptions :p

Combination is simply by mass, if mass1+mass2 is the mass of a atom, it works.

An Example: He (mass 4) and Li (mass 7) can be combined to B (mass 11).
You can easily see the mass of the atom below its name on the map.
This is also explained in the tutorial (The ? in the menu, you should also have seen it the first time you started a map).

I will release a guide here in the following days.
Oh I see. I've got a periodic table here at my desk. I'm sure that'll come in handy :p
I've only played a few levels but I guess I have been overtinking it too much for this logic.

Overthinking stuff seems to have been my flaw once again ;)

If you hover over a atom and hold shift, you can see what it can be combined with, might help as well :D
There is no evidence of a tutorial in my version!
There is a '?' in the lower left on the main menu/level select screen.
Related question, trying to get through level 24 where it requires Og2-Sm and I'm not sure what rules that combination requires? If I have 2 Og and 1 Sm, will that count, or what?

you have to get a compount of multible equal atoms together that (all combined) equal to the weight of Og2Sm. You then fuse these together and get a Og2Sm as the result.

Is there a way to see the element masses being used somehow?

That is the Number below the Atom. You can also see what it can be combined with by holding shift and hovering over a atom with the cursor.
Sorry, I meant by that, see the numbers of additional elements. Particularly on later levels where one needs to plan a few steps ahead. so I need to figure out the intermediate steps

For example, just having a way to see a periodic table with the numbers you use.
